Bangalore, Aug 7: The state government’s decision to place a blanket ban on iron ore exports from the state has been opposed by a prominent minister, Karunakar Reddy. He says it was a one-sided decision.
“In banning iron ore exports, the Chief Minister has taken unilateral decision. Before taking this decision, he did not consult me. This decision will have more adverse effects than advantages. The companies, which have entered into agreements to supply iron to foreign companies, are facing lot of problems because of the ban,” the minister said.
Reddy’s comments came within a short time after his brother and tourism minister, Janardan Reddy, welcomed the ban. Janardan Reddy had supported the CM’s decision, expressing the view that the iron ore mined from the state should be exported only after it becomes an end product, and gets value additions. It is not known as to whether Karunakar Reddy had consulted his brother before passing his remarks.
Karunakar Reddy’s statement has created ripples within the BJP, as it reflects some dissidence within the government for its own decision to ban ore exports. It may be recalled that state Congress president, R V Deshpande had vehemently opposed the ban, saying that the industry will suffer and workers dependent on it will be driven to streets because of the move. Karunakar Reddy, by voicing his opposition to the ban, has joined the detractors of the ban move.
At the same time, Chief Minister, Yeddyurappa, who is in Shimoga, refused to be drawn into any kind of controversy on the discordant note struck by his revenue minister. “I have come here to conduct development programmes. Let me confine myself to this alone,” he quipped when asked about his reaction.
