Mangalore: Meteorological Department Issues Warning to Fishermen, Citizens

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 1: Although the rainfall subsided on Tuesday August 31, the sea has turned tumultuous. As a result, most of the fishing boats have reached their nearest fishing ports for mooring. Several boats from the twin-districts reached Karwar, Tadadi and Ratnagiri ports because of speeding winds.

The deep sea fishing boats and purse seine boats too did not venture into the sea as high velocity winds are blowing from south to north in the deep sea. A purse seine boat named ‘Amrut Sagar’ was stranded at sea after its engine failed. The fishermen in other boats helped in bringing the boat and the fishermen of the boat to the shore. However, a dinghy attached to the boat got separated, inflicting a loss of two lac rupees on the owner of the boat, Satish Kunder.

On Tuesday, Kottigehara in Chikmagalur district recorded the highest rainfall of 18 cms, with Linganamakki and Agumbe receiving 16 cms each.

The meteorological department has warned the fishermen that coastal Karnataka is likely to witness winds blowing at a velocity of 45 to 55 kms per hour during the next 24 hours. It also said that some places in Karnataka coast are likely to experience rains in excess of 125 mms during the next two days.
