Belagavi, Jun 29: Six members of a family met their deaths in water on Monday June 28.

Six among the victims decided to end lives because of loan burden. A farmer and his wife along with four children jumped into the agricultural pit in Doranahalli, Shahapur taluk, Yadagiri district.

Farmer from Doranahalli, Bheemaraya Surpur (45), his wife Shanthamma Surpur (36), along with children, Sumitra (12), Sridevi (13), Shivaraj (13) and Laxmi (6) plunged into an agricultural pit. Their bodies were retrieved by the firemen and expert divers from the village.

Bheemaraya had sold the land he inherited 14 years back to clear an existing loan. In the two acre land that was inherited by his mother, he tried to grow horticultural crops. However, the result was disastrous and his borrowing exceeded Rs 20 lac. Being unable to clear the loan, he decided to commit suicide along with family members, it is learnt.
