Bengaluru, Jun 3: A skywalk on the busy Ballari road leading to the Bengaluru International Airport Ltd is being constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore near Mekhri Circle and is likely to be opened in six months, deputy chief minister, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said on Wednesday.

Speaking after performing the Bhoomi puja for the skywalk project, the deputy chief minister said it will be equipped with an escalator facility and will be constructed to enable the people to reach Palace Ground from the Ramana Maharshi Meditation Centre near Mekhri Circle.

He pointed out that Ballari Road has been witnessing a large number of accidents as there is no facility to enable people to cross it from one side to the other and a large number of deaths.

As the Ballari Road is leading to BIAL and attracts heavy vehicular traffic, it is prone to accidents and a skywalk was found necessary, he said.

The deputy chief minister said, "Prakash Arts Company has been entrusted with taking up the project and they have agreed to look after not only the skywalk construction but its maintenance. The company will pay a license fee of Rs 12 lac per year to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). There will be escalators on either side of the road which will greatly help the physically challenged, aged and children. A lift facility will also be part of the project."

BBMP former corporator, Sarvamangala Keshavamurthy was present at the function.

Earlier, Dr Narayan, who is also the state covid task force chief, visited the Gandhi Gram Primary Health Centre at Maruthi Extension of Srirampur in the Malleswaram assembly constituency to inspect the vaccination camp.

He also visited Sri Veerendra Patil PU and Degree College of Sadashivanagar to inspect the vaccination camp.
