Udupi, Jul 10: City Municipal Council (CMC) officials upon public complaints vacated about eight unauthorized petty shops selling fish on five places near Brahmagiri circle on Saturday July 10.

The operation was conducted in strict police security in between stiff opposition by the shopkeepers. A shopkeeper, Ashok Raj, objected to the sudden operation without serving notice and protested by lying under eviction vehicle, but the police prevented any untoward incident.

The officials had tried to vacate the petty shop of Dalit woman Radha Ashokraj selling fish on June 5 during lockdown. The operation was suspended after objections from various quarters. Counetr complaints were registered at Udupi city police station. Dalit organizations too had opposed the move.

In the operation on Saturday, officials have evicted petty shops including that of Radha. They also vacated metal sheets of shops and a garage extended to the government land.

“I was selling fish for livelihood with the trade license of my wife. We had a hard time without proper business. The officials arrived early in the morning with several police personnel and vacated the shops,” lamented Ashok Raj.

“We have taken away unauthorised petty shops on government land after public complaints. Those are in the custody of the municipal council now. The owners can take them away after payment of the fine. They will be legally disposed of otherwise,” said council engineer Mohan Raj.

Municipal council commissioner Dr Udaya Shetty, assistant executive engineer Mohan Raj, revenue officer Dhananjay, Udupi city police station inspector Pramod Kumar and others were present.

Where were the Municipal Corporation official when they started their petty business ? Many of them are issued trade licenses to start the business. This was either issued due to the political influence or by accepting bribe. First of all take action against the officials and then the petty shoppers.

In India, there is facility of "weekly Santhe" where anyone can put up a temporary shop and sell their items and remove the shop on the very same day after "santhe" ends. Many families do "santhe vyapara" and take care of their family. There is lots of scope for poor to live in India. Hence, there is no excuse to make unauthorized shops on government land.

There are a lot of unauthorised petty shops in Nandigudda, KPT, near Kadri Park, Bikarnakatte, and many other places too.The people who pays rent to the building owners are struggling to make profits while these petty shops can be rent free. Also after a few years, the govt is forced to pay compensation from the tax payers money to remove these petty shops as they are taking away a livelihood. So why don't the officials act immediately when these petty shops are set up here? It will also cause traffic problems gradually. Most of the well run countries made sure unauthorised petty shops are not set up even before 1970s. But here in India, its not the case even now! the case.

Hampankatta is a busy area. I feel it could be profitable if I put a petty shop selling fish there. At least till we recover from Covid effect on economy. I have to spend money and run around to get a license, I would put it without any license. What is your say?
