Mangaluru: Engineering student trusts fake phone call, loses Rs 2.34 lac

Mangaluru, Jul 14: A complaint has been filed in the cyber-crime police station here about a woman who called an engineering student seeking payment of college fee, cheated him after collecting Rs 2.34 lac.

The student who was taken for a raid in this case is a third year computer science student of an engineering college at Vamanjoor. He received a call on July 7 mooning from a lady who introduced herself as Mehr Anuzhya from the university. She told him that a link has been forwarded to him and that college fee and other charges should be paid by using the link failing which his hall ticket would be cancelled.

Shortly thereafter, the student received a link in his mobile phone. He opened the link and found that it requires password, Mobile number etc. He was told to do Rs 200 recharge by using the wallet. The woman thereafter made several calls including one on July 8 as per which the student was asked to remit money. He transferred Rs 74,126 from his account.

On the next day Rs 60,000 was transferred. As his account did not have balance, he transferred one lac rupees from the account of his elder sister. The complainant stated that the woman has totally collected Rs 2,34,126 from him in the guise of fee and other structures, and sought action against her.
