Beltangady, Sep 16: A person named Gopalakrishna Bhat (52), son of well-known poet, the late Padyana Tirumaleshwar Bhat, residing in Berbalaje House in Machchina village in the taluk, breathed his last on Wednesday September 15. Bhat, who was running a fancy store in Madantyar, had donated one of his kidneys to his younger brother a few days ago.

After Bhat’s younger brother, Pundalik Bhat, fell sick recently after both his kidneys failed, the doctors, while looking for suitable kidneys, found that Pundalik Bhat’s blood group matched with that of his brother, Gopalakrishna Bhat. After he donated one of kidneys, Gopalkrishna Bhat was on the recovery path for four days, before suddenly collapsing on Saturday last. He was diagnosed with brain-related complications, and without responding to treatments, he passed away on Wednesday.

In his honour, shops in Madantyar downed their shutters on Wednesday.
