Mangaluru, Aug 4: Former MLA J R Lobo alleged violation of guidelines in formation of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) ward committees.

Addressing media here on Wednesday August 4, Lobo said, ‘The high court had directed formation of ward committees in Mangaluru City Corporation. The applications for the same were invited and 1,278 have shown interest to be part of the ward committees. A draft list of 600 members was released and the MCC commissioner stated that citizens can file their objections and suggestions within 15 days. As per the guidelines of Karnataka Municipal Act, the members of the ward committees should not associate with any political activities or be affiliated to any political party.

“As much as 90% approved members for the ward committees belong to BJP party and are actively involved in party activities. This is completely violation of law while forming the ward committees. How it is possible that 90% members who are actively involved in political party activities are included in the ward committees?” he questioned.

Lobo urged the MCC Commissioner to scrap the list of ward committee members. He further questioned the criteria on which the members were selected to be in the committee. “On what basis Sevanjali trust is considered as an NGO in the ward committee. When an MLA is the president of the trust, is it not a politically-affiliated NGO? BJP is misusing the power for their own benefits,” he said.

He also questioned if the MCC commissioner would like to work under the clutches of BJP or perform his duties like an independent officer.

Former MLA Mohiuddin Bava, Congress leader Vishwas Kumar Das, Subodh Alva, Mahabala Marla and others were present.

THE KARNATAKA MUNICIPALITIES (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2020; sec. 80 I states: “(3) The representative shall strictly be non political and must declare that he is neither sympathizer nor a member of any political party or outfit.” Although this is the law of the land. I beg to disagree with it. It should be fine to be a member of any political party that a citizen freely chooses to join. The law may have read,” not be holding any post as an office-bearer in a political party after being chosen to be and while he/she is a member of the WC/AS “. If the said proviso of the law is to be followed in spirit then, by extension, even protesting on any matter connected with WC’s and AS’s must follow the same law. This means that Mr.Lobo is doing exactly what he is alleging the other side of doing. This provision of the law will also eliminate all those who have voted for this or that political party during the previous election/s; as, can they not then be deemed to have sympathized with a political party by voting for a candidate. We have to “undirty-fy”(i’ve just create a new word) politics. It is time for us to understand that “politics” is merely the art of governing. What is needed is “good politics”. The more citizens learn and get involved with “good politics” the better it is for themselves. Democracy is not a spectator sport , you have to get on the field and play it. This is the reason why bad politicians wish to keep good citizens out of politics by hook or by crook. I recommend citizens who wish to improve their own lives to educate themselves by reading Sanjeev Sabhlok’ book “BFN – Let’s unleash India”.(available for free download on his blog).

Elections should be free will of people to exercise their rights and elect a candidate of their choice. Party Politics should never interfere in the free rights of people. Whichever party that wishes to come to power should adhere to to the norms

Ward committees only to fool the public as we are usually fooled by the ruling party. What happens to the smart city projects all of no use? The Hampankatta junction is only for motorists not for pedestrians, no zebra crossings. The signals for pedestrians is not aligned and just waste of tax payers money.
