Mangalore, Sep 24:  Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning battered Karnataka coast on the night of Thursday September 23. Almost all the places in the coast received heavy rains. Due to lightning, home appliances of several people were damaged, while a person from near Moodbidri lost his life.

Janardan Poojary (45), a farmer by profession, residing in Ganadakotya in Karinje village within Moodbidri municipality, lost his life instantly after lightning struck him on Thursday night. He had ventured out of his home to reach the bathroom located in a corner of the courtyard, to take a bath. His daughter, Jyoti (17), was injured. Poojary is survived by wife and three daughters.

A cattleshed located by the side of a house near Salmara in Uppoor village near Brahmavar in Udupi district was gutted in the fire that was ignited due to lightning. At the time, only firewood was stored in the premises, and no cattle were inside. Louis, owner of the house located by the side of the gram panchayat office in Uppoor, suffered a loss of several thousands of rupees as a result.

The rain, which started after nightfall, continued till late night. The intensity of lightning and rain took the people by surprise, as they were experiencing cloudy weather without rains since the last few days.
