Udupi, Oct 22: Some covert elements damaged the statue of Mahatma Gandhiji, installed at Malpe beach, on the night of Wednesday October 20.

The tourism department had installed this statue on the Independence Day this year. Apparently, the mischief mongers tried to remove the spectacles of the statue. As the spectacles were fitted to the statue, they could not remove it. Without losing heart, they crushed he glasses with stone boulders and left behind the broken spectacles at the feet of the statue of the Father of the Nation.

The locals informed the tourism development committee about the incident. No police complaint was lodged in this connection.
