Mangalore, Oct 23: The department of human resources, Shree Devi Institute of Social Work organized a workshop on compliance and benefits of social security laws today here on Saturday October 23.

The workshop was inaugurated by Venkatesh A Shindihatti, assistant labour commissioner, Mangalore division. In his inaugural address he explained that social security refers to the protection provided by the society and state to its workers to enable them to triumph over various contingencies of life, that is, various unforeseen events of life.

A developed and dedicated workforce is a prerequisite for the success of any organization. For this reason a number of obligations have been imposed on the employer by the government, non-compliance of which entails penalty and even prosecution, he added.

He further said that ignorance of law is no excuse. Therefore everyone, including owner, employer, manager, supervisor or even employee, must keep themselves abreast of their rights and obligations under social security laws.

Shaker Pujary, deputy general manager, Aspinwall and Company Ltd and the chairman of NIPM Mangalore chapter was the guest of honour. In his address he said that being secured in life is every human being's need and employees are no exceptions. There are various laws enacted by the government to protect the workers during various eventualities of life. Human resource professionals need to be aware of these legislations so that they can assist the employees during emergencies, he added.

A Sadananda Shetty, chairman, Shree Devi Education Trust presided over the programme. In his presidential address he threw light on various social security laws which are applicable in the organized and unorganized sector.

He also said that compared to the organized sector, social security measures are lacking in the unorganized sector. There is a need for effective social security measures in the unorganized sectors too. He further added that proper implementation is a must for the success of any programme initiated by the government for which the human resource professionals need to play a greater role, he said.
