Udupi, Oct 29: The members of Malpe Fishermen’s Association staged a protest in front of deputy commissioner’s office on Friday October 29 demanding to fulfill several of their needs.

The protestors said that with the sole intention of knowing the opinion of fishermen about CRZ the central environment minister Jayaram Ramesh organized a meeting of fishermen at 10 places across the nation. But the any of the suggestions given by fishermen were not taken into consideration in the Draft CRZ Notification published by the central government which has infuriated the fishermen, they said.

They further said that during the NDA government on diesel purchase, the fishermen had a central excise duty concession of Rs 1.50 per litre which has been raised to Rs 3.00 stating the reason that the concession is restricted only to the BPL category. This rule is completely against the fishermen’s interests and the term BPL should be boycotted, they demanded.

According to National Farmers’ Commission report the sate and entral governments should give the compensation of Rs 1500, they insisted.

The artificial Reept method which is of no advantage to the fishermen must be withdrawn and the condition of fish-selling markets across the state should be developed, the protestors demanded.

The members submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner Hemalatha along with certain other demands apart from the ones mentioned above.

Hiriyanna T Kidiyur, Keshav Kundhar, Rama Kanchan, Yashpal Suvarna, Sathish Amin, Sadhu Salian, Salara Kaanchan, Appi Suvarna and Radha Suvarna among others were present.
