Mangalore, Oct 29: School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, has become only the second college in the city and the first in the field of social work to have been recognised as a research centre by the Mangalore University.

This was revealed by Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, vice-chancellor, Mangalore University at a UGC-sponsored international conference on 'women and mental health' held at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya here on Thursday October 28. The programme was organised in association with Flinders University, Australia.

He further clarified that the college has been given this recognition owing to its infrastructure, research faculty and labs. The college had applied for the status a year ago.

Speaking on the topic of mental health and women, Prof Murthy said that there was a social stigma regarding mental health in the country and the need of the hour is to facilitate open discussion on the issue.

Roshni Nilaya had already been recognised for offering PhD programmes but now the students can avail of greater facilities and need not depend on other research centres. Even students from other countries will be able to pursue their research programmes under the guidance of eligible teachers of the college, Prof Murthy informed.

Sunita Krishnan, founder of Hyderabad-based NGO Prajwala and others were present.
