Mangalore, Oct 29: A protest was staged by the members of Coastal Karnataka Fishermen’s Action Committee (CKFAC) demanding the withdrawal of the proposed Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) 2010 in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Friday October 29.
 
The protest was organised under the aegies of National Fishermen’s Forum.

Addressing the protestors, Vasudev Boloor, general secretary of CKFAC grieved that the interest of fisheries sector has been cast aside by the state and union governments and both the governments have been passing anti-fisheries laws threatening the survival of the fishermen community.

He said the proposed Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) 2010 will adversely affect the source of revenue of the fishermen.

Various other demands were raised in the protest. The protestors urged to undertake dredging operation at all the 15 ports across coastal parts of the state and demanded construction of brakewaters, development of fish markets, steps to counter sea erosion and development of new ports.

Fishermen community leaders Nithin Kumar, Sathish Kumar, B C Seetharam and Navin Karkera among others were present.
