Mangaluru: Our Lady of Pompei Church Gurpura holds centenary celebration

Mangaluru, Nov 8: The day November 7, 2021 was a very special and joyous day for all parishioners of Our Lady of Pompei Church, Gurpura Kaikamba which celebrated its 100 years centenary celebration(1921 -2021).

On Sunday all the parishioners took part in the grand thanks giving mass celebrated by main celebrant Dr Peter Paul Saldanha – bishop, diocese of Mangalore along with co-celebrants Dr Aloysius Paul Dsouza, bishop emeritus, diocese of Mangalore, Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhy – bishop, diocese of Beltangady, Dr Pius James Dsouza, OCD, definitor general, order of Discalced Carmelites, Rome, Fr Marcel Saldanha – vicar forane –Pezar Deanery, along with Fr Anthony Lobo- parish priest and all the guest priest. More than 2000 parishioners along with guests, religious sisters were present during the thanks giving mass.

After the thanks giving mass a grand felicitation programme was arranged at the church ground. The chief guest of the day Dr Peter Paul Saldanha –inaugurated the programme by planting a coconut tree and watering it. Thereafter Fr Anthony Lobo – the parish priest welcomed all the dignitaries on the dias and all the people off the dias.

Praveen Lobo –secretary of the parish pastoral council read the centenary report followed by felicitation to all former parish priests by Dr Aloysius Paul Dsouza –bishop emeritus. Feliciation was also carried out to, vicar Forane Fr.Marcel Saldanha, all the former parish pastoral council presidents, secretaries convenier of the centenary celebration by Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhy –bishop, dioese of Beltangady along with Pius James Dsouza, OCD.

Followed by feliciation to the highest donors along with highest contributors for centenary celebration by Sr M Roseceline BS, superior general, Bethany Society Mangalore – along with J R Lobo and Sr M Cecilia Mendonca BS.

Followed by felicitation for Fr Dr Pius James Dsouza, OCD –definitor general, order of Discaled Carmelites, Rome , Fr Marcel Saldanha –vicar forane-Pezar Deanery and Sr M Roseceline BS, superior general, Bethany Society mangalore and Sr M Cicilia Mendonca BS, provincial superior, Mangalore Province- by all three bishops.

A history book was released by bishop Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhy –bishop, diocese of Belthangady. Felicitation to Dr Y Bharath Shetty, MLA, Mangaluru North Constituency by all three bishops. Followed by feliciation to all ex MLA –J R Lobo, Muhammed Shareef Arshadi and Dr M Mohan Alva by all three bishops. Ivan Dsouza, ex MLC, govt of Karnataka, and Moideen Bava, ex MLA, Mangaluru North Constituency were present.

Feliciation to all panchayat presidents –includings Umensh Moolya, president Kandavara gram panchayat, Yashwanth Kumar Shetty – president Gurupura gram panchayat, Nonayya Koitian – president, Ganjimut gram panchayat.

Feliciation to Fr Pius Pinto for spearheading history book, and Dr Godvin Lobo –editor for centinary sovenier by Fr Marcel Saldanha.

All the three bishops were felicitated by Fr Antony Lobo parish priest. Centinary souvenir was released by Dr Peter Paul Saldanha followed by his presidential address.
Finally vote of thanks was read by Jerald Lobo – vice president of parish pastoral council followed by grace on meals by Fr Antony Lobo.

Roman Lobo and Delcy Rodrigues compered the programme. The duo conducted the entire programme very beautifully and professionally from beginning to end .
A lunch was served to more than 5500 people prepared by the parishioners.
