Mangaluru, Nov 10: After the lockdown was lifted, a large number of two-wheelers have flooded the city roads. Many of the two-wheeler riders apparently have no patience to abide by road rules and therefore they flagrantly violate traffic rules with impunity.
The reckless and high speed driving of the riders pose danger to themselves and the general public, particularly the senior citizen pedestrians. The people have urged the police to undertake verification of vehicle documents and besides stopping the two-wheelers that are found to be moving about recklessly, the concerned have to be fined, they say.

The two-wheelers are found to be moving at high speed both in the main roads and interior roads. They are also seen breezing through shortcut paths at will. People have complained about the two-wheelers whizzing past the main roads and parts of national highways passing through the city and also driving against the traffic on the reverse side. Use of mobile phones when riding the two-wheelers, moving in the opposite direction on one-way roads, moving dangerously through short cut roads, and violation of traffic rules have been often seen.
Some have fitted their mobile phones to the front portion of the two-wheeler which the riders keep watching while some others hold the phones in one hand while continuing to operate it, and control the vehicles with the other hand. There are also people working for food delivery services who have to deliver the items ordered within a specified time limit. The people say that these boys use interior roads as far as possible as any delay can rob them of the hard work they put in to deliver the food parcels, the people point out.
There have been complaints about the jolly rides of two-wheelers. With the opening of colleges, there will automatically be an increase in the movement of motorbikes and scooters. There are occasions in which the two wheeler riders ride on the footpaths when the traffic is heavy. If the police leave such instances unchecked the problem is sure to aggravate in the coming days.
M A Nataraj, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) here says that steps are already being taken against those who violate traffic rules when riding two-wheelers. He recalled that there had been some complaints about the food delivery boys during the lockdown. As the complaints have emerged again now, special vigil will be kept on their movements, he clarified.
