Bangalore, Nov 10: A division bench of the state High Court (HC) has upheld the validity of an order issued by the then deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, V Ponnuraj, making it mandatory for the sand transportation vehicle owners to fix global positioning systems to their vehicles.

On February 8 this year, the DK DC had issued an order by which, it was made mandatory for the lorries involved with sand transportation to have global positioning systems in them. A person named Simon from Mangalore had, through a writ petition filed in the HC, argued that the order does not apply to trucks, as the order mentions about lorries alone. He had pleaded that the officials were not in order in insisting on GPS for trucks transporting sand, as the said order does not cover trucks.

The DK district administration stood by its stand that any vehicle that transports sand is covered by the said order. The bench, presided over by Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice A S Bopanna, accepted the arguments of the district administration and dismissed the writ petition.
