Mangalore, Nov 20: State Human Rights Commission chairman S R Nayak on Saturday November 20 alleged indifferent policy in the state was rendering the commission helpless.

Addressing mediapersons after receiving the petitions from the public at a meeting in the deputy commissioner's office, Nayak reiterated that the state government's apathy towards the commission and its recommendations has resulted in losing trust in the commission.  

Further, Nayak said that the commission has urged the government to increase the staff strength and also provide needed infrastructure. While the requirement is 491 staff members, the government has so far sanctioned only 105 staff, he said.

In this scenario, commission has been burdened by over 21,812 cases registered across the state as on October 31, said Nayak. As many as 12500 cases have been disposed, he observed. As far as Dakshina Kannada district is concerned, nearly 1,000 cases have been registered in the district out of which 450 cases have been disposed, he said.

    It is a shame. Not only it easily comes under political pressure but appears to be under corporate pressure also. SHRC has been a toothless tiger all along. When residents were forcibly thrown out along with their belongings into rains at Yellur by Nagarjuna it gave various uses to render any help. When it cannot offer minimum protection of human rights it has no right to spend taxpayers money. Nayak should pull the shutter down and go home retired. This gimmick of face saving does not work anymore.
