Mangalore, Nov 30: Local city corporation commissioner, Dr Vijayaprakash, announced that every ward in the city corporation will be allocated a sum of Rs 55 lac each towards road repairs. He was replying to the questions raised by the opposition corporators, who drew the attention of the corporation administration towards the despicable state of roads in the city, and the earlier promise of the mayor to provide a grant of Rs 50 lac to each ward. The general session of the corporation held on Monday November 29.
The commissioner noted that the total length of roads lying within the corporation limits is 799 kms. He informed that out of the special grant of Rs 100 crore to be received from the state government, a sum of Rs 25 lac would be provided to each of the wards, and that an action plan in this connection, has already been forwarded to the government. “In addition, Rs 15 lac from the discretionary quota of the corporators, Rs 10 lac from general corpus, and about five lac rupees each from other available funds, would be available for being allocated to every ward. The road repairs have been delayed because of extended rains,” he explained.
Opposition leaders, Shashidhar Hegde, Harinath, D K Ashok Kumar, Navin D’Souza, independent corporator, Mariamma Thomas etc., expressed their ire at the inability of the city corporation to get the comprehensive development plan, which has been creating impediment for house construction by common people, modified. The commissioner explained that a high level committee headed by retired chief secretary in the government, Dr A Ravindra, has been formed for this purpose, and that the committee is likely to a take a clear stand on the CDP modification in its next meeting.
When CPM member, Jayanti Shetty, demanded house numbers to some families living in Tannirbavi since many years, corporator of that ward, Santosh, asked her to take care of her own ward, without bothering about the problems in his ward.
The general session of the city corporation council passed a resolution against including Mulky town panchayat area within the city corporation limits, as the corporation’s functioning has been suffering because of shortage of staff. The session was considering a recommendation made by MLA, Abhayachandra Jain, which was referred to the corporation by the urban development department.
Noting the contributions made by two outstanding sportspersons in making coastal Karnataka proud, the city corporation decided to accord a public felicitation to Ashwini Akkunje, who has won two gold medals at the Asiad, and Mamata Poojary, who was a member of the Kabaddi team that won gold for India at the Asiad.
City mayor, Rajani Dugganna, presided. Deputy mayor, Rajendra Kumar, was present.
