Centre approves Shiradi Ghat 4-lane upgradation work at Rs 1,200 cr

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Union minister for National Highways and Road Transport Nitin Gadkari has approved the Rs 1200 crore project to upgrade the existing 2-lane Shiradi Ghat Road into 4-lane highway.

Shiradi Ghat is a major lifeline and link road to the coastal region from Bengaluru and is very crucial for the development of the entire coastal region as also the malnad region of Karnataka.

The National Highways Authority of India would take up the project and complete it in 2 years, Gadkari said.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has assured full cooperation and speedy approvals for implementing the project.

Shiradi ghat road needs immediate upgradation as it is usually in pitiable condition during the monsoon season and unmotorable and landslides leads to blockage of the entire stretch for days together.

The Union government has cleared the proposal to upgrade the Shiradi Ghat Road into a 4-lane highway.

With the upgradation, the entire stretch of highway between Bengaluru and Mangaluru would become a 4-lane road. The 4-laning of national highway 75 will accelerate the economic growth of the region.

The Union Minister has also instructed the NHAI to study the proposal to build a 6-lane tunnel through the Shiradi Ghat.

    Bangalore and it's suburb bosts of 70 % of Karnataka economic activity, unlike software and bio tech which can be exported vis internet and air cargo , Rest of the exports has to happen via sea cargo, The current Bangalore inland port is already chocking and Bangalore urgently needs a good connectivity to a sea port , Mangalore is the nearest and if we do not have good connectivity then most industries will go to tamilnadu and Andhra. Hence this immediate fourlaning of the existing stretch is the need of the hour. Here there are good road designs which can address and overcome 90% of all defects currently seen in the road designs used to lay roads . The Stone matrix asphalt bituminous road design once used along with a good drainage layer beneath the road should be the answer to a good motorable road which is pot hole free, rutting free, can handle heavy vehicals ,is having the best skid resistance in all weathers ,( weather raining or sunny) . This can be layed at just 25% cost of concrete roads and can be executed faster . Has a maintenance free life of 10 to 15 years . This design has been suggested to NHAI since the times of Oscar . But lobbies and a few powerfull set of people decide and use designes which cannot sustain in this region . Also the design for the drainage has to be done during the rainy season and not during the summer . There is no extensive debat discussion on the right technologies to be incorporated , Even now if all stake holders are serious then we can contribute our constructive thoughts to help is finalysing the most appropriate designs which we all can be proud of.     If extremely complicated terrain Delhi Mumbai Express way could be constructed, Nagpur Mumbai Expressway could be constructed, Ganga Expressway could be constructed, Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway could be constructed, why 6 lane tunnel and upgradation of such an important stretch of highway between Bengaluru and Mangaluru taking such a long time? Even now there's no firm commitment. Our Political syndicate will power is very weak. Even double tracking of entire Konkan Railway passing through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka & Kerala also not happening. Though we have made extremely good progress in software industry, educational field, Banking etc. we are extremely lagging behind in infrastructure!

    I would wait to see it and drive on it before I believe it. Over the years, we have seen many news reports of several hundred crores sanctioned for this road; work ongoing in full swing etc. If all were actually spent and work had been done there, it would easily rate as world's more expensive road. Indeed...a 6 lane tunnel without affecting the ecosystem is desirable. Karnataka must be forceful in getting its agenda in Delhi and elsewhere. Only today we learnt that we are least electrified state when it comes to Railway. This is regardless of which political party is at power...Karnataka invariably received step motherly attitude from the Hindi heartland.

    Possibly have more frequency of passenger trains -- people will enjoy also many scenic routes-- very limited trains right now -- It can be also feeder trains -- connecting to bus routes after Ghats -- both ways -- This will reduce bus traffic and congestion -- & other hazards- possibly more goods also by trains -- reduce truck -- freighter movement on roads--

    First of all there is NO breake what the Minister Gadkari speaks. He talks all future. He talks about 100% EV cars on roads. He talks about 180 KM PH speed on highways. I am surprised why our beloved Mangalore MP did not raised this issue all these years. Now they are talking about tunnels and then they will blame the forest department for not clearing the matter. Previous governments had reasons of not having suffecient funds, but the present government importing fuel at a price half of the previous government prices and selling at 50% higher taxes means government has a bigger budget. The funniest chapter of the NDA is they call the 1km work done as 4Km work because the 1km 4lane counted as 4km .

    I have been on this stretch, and it really is very sensitive and prone to landslides. To widen the road will mean to cut more of the hills(which cannot be reversed) and it will ultimately lead to more landslides. The number of landslides that happened here in the past two years is close to 30. Please go on this highway and see it for yourself. By allowing projects like this we are asking for the fury of mother nature. This stretch is not the same as Mumbai -Pune stretch which is more of a stone hill and less prone to landslides. Please people its a humble request to you all, for once forget about your political ideology and religion and think through this . This project will also mean more number of toll booths, so tell me is this really meant to help the common man ? The solution maybe that increase the number of trains between Bangalore-Mangalore . The only roadblock to this is the number to platforms available in Mangalore. Which I think can be more easily handled than spending 1200 cr on widening project. Western ghats are the very source of water we drink, without it we will not even get proper rain. Please dont ruin it in this irreversible manner.

    What is the Technical knowledge -- Public want a good Motorable road -- without land slides -without pot holes -- craters - moon like surfaces and without paying tolls- build proper retaining walls etc etc -- The project involves as much as possible making straight roads which is not necessary -- as involving cutting into hills -- dangerous gorges etc etc-- OVERALL not rocket science-- all over the world there are roads -- very similiar --- well constructed--

    Today we have around 6 Tolls between Bangalore & Mangalore. After the fourlaning of the full stretch, we will have 12 Tolls guarenteed. I am of the view that except for the Shiradi stretch which even with peak traffic can be covered in 50 to 60 minutes rest of the Road can have 4 laning. so the max savings could be around 15 to 20 minutes by 4 laing the shiradi stretch. therefore there is not much of benefit. This is an ecological disaster for sure. Our future generation will bear the brunt.

    Finally a dream come true, let us all support this with a positive note (Phase I), but let this not repeat like the Hassan- Mangalore railway line which was approved during First five year plan. Let us also hope to have approval for the tunneling of this strech (Phase II) soonest possible. Hope the Four lane will be performed with all the best Engineering techniques (Technologies) in place

    Dear Sir, The proposal of tunneling is kept optional and may be during second Phase. Now the debottlenecking of this stretch is essential and let us move ahead with a the four lane concept on a fast track basis. In the mean time, let the NHAI authorities perform a feasibility study with a +/- 25% budgeting for the Tunneling of Shiradi Ghat stretch, which can be planned during Phase II.

    Will it happen in our life time? Why such an important life line neglected so far? If constructed right as per Roads and Highway engineering....it can handle any trucks and even 16 wheel multi axels! Politicians deserve a big cut and result is poor roads and potholes within a year! If this contract is given to a reputed foreign road contract company( there will be plenty of Indian educated civil engineers) , it may cost 25% more,,,but the road will be fit for a century! Otherwise we will pay 50 times more in a century for repairs...politicians happy, contractors happy and full flow for decades...! Our engineering colleges teaches well,,, corruption does not allow them to practice right norms!

    The amount of money poured on this road till now, Economy & Cargo Aeroplanes might have been purchased for transportation with much more cheaper rates. Whatever they do, this road will be closed atleast 3 months in year during rainy season. Why waste so much money on this road? Air & rail transportation should be the best option instead of roads.

    Overladen trucks - mining Tipper trucks -- are main causes of road damages-In addition huge machinery - multi axle - multi wheels etc etc -- In addition difficult to understand with a GAS PIPE LINE -- still have LPG tankers -- on ghat roads -- Initially it was said to complete some contracts but now endless --

    I suggest that all of us should write, Twit and post through Instagram, requesting Gadakari to replace road tunnel with a tunnel for railways, as this would help in faster movement of goods and pasengers. This would not only reduce the consumption of Diseal and Petrol, but also conserve the natural vegetation of the western Ghats by reduceing the pollution. Travel or transport by railways will always be cheaper than road. Thus helping millions of travellers. Any way after the expansion of current highway into four lane road, I dont see the necessity of having another route for Motor vehicles. As the time saved in traveling through tunnel and existing road may be hardly be one hourl

    First the most critical is about 10 kms stretch ---- road between Sakleshpur --( Donigall --mainly ) --and Marnahalli -- Better road -- It was stated will commence January - beginning - of this year -- COST OF approx 32 crores-- - Now giving a High hope big ticket announcement -- even 10 kms will not be done for next 2 years -- IT IS SAID BETTER IS THE ENEMY OF BEST -- like bullet train -- best -- people are ok with better -- A high speed train -- instead of a never ending bullet train project --

    Cost of the project may be 1200 crores. But nature will be destroyed and you can't put a price to that. Just ensure that the existing road is smooth so that traffic flows. Do not cut lakhs of trees for this purpose.
