Udupi, Jan 27: The six Muslim students of Government Girls PU College here have rejected MLA and College Development Committee chairma Raghupati Bhat's offer of providing them online classes if they were adamant on Hijab. They are firm on their stand and have demanded on-campus classes wearing Hijab.

MLA Raghupati Bhat yesterday had stated that those students who want to attend classes wearing Hijab could do so virtually after the state department of education had ordered a status quo in the matter.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, January 27, the protesting students said, "Hijab is our Constitutional right. We will not attend any online classes. We are not ready to face any discrimination again in the name of online classes. We have lost classes for one month already. Online classes do not facilitate laboratory sessions or practicals. We want to attend the classes along with other students on equal grounds. Other Muslim students of the college are willing to wear Hijab but after seeing the problems we are facing they are not coming forward openly. The news reports appearing on this issue on a daily basis has scared them. Education is important for us and along with that we want our rights as well."

The six students also clarified that their only demand was permission to wear Hijab in the classes and nothing else.

This problem is created by unnecessary elements, many Muslim girls have been attending school and colleges with or without hijab, this issue popping out now isn't proper.

And to hide that, these people are acting as if some aliens have fallen from the sky that all the other students cannot concentrate on their studies because of these aliens. These 6 brave girls are closely and dearly following the Indian constitution. They have the right to dress detailed in the constitution and now they are protesting peacefully with valid and reasonable points within the democratic norm. Just as the Sikhs can wear turbans which is incorporated in any school, police, military uniforms these also have the right to follow the same. Their faces are clearly seen except now they are wearing Covid face masks otherwise thier hijab covers only the hair which is more than good enough. No sensible person or organisation is demanding more than or violating what is enshrined in the articles of constitution but this BJP govt is dealing with these innocent girls anti constitutionally.

Stop this drama girls..... I 100% respect your religion and believes but in school you have to follow uniform rules. You have full freedom to wear hijab outside school. Everyone need to respect school rules and uniform system. If you girls doesn't want to follow your school rules take TC and move to other school which handled by your community, you will get full freedom of Hijab!!!

"Other Muslim students of the college are willing to wear Hijab but after seeing the problems we are facing they are not coming forward openly" - what does this mean? It means hijab is not compulsary. These striking students are so stubborn. They are not bothered about their future. Purpose of attending college is education and not these kind of strikes. It is high time all educational institues should implement strict uniform to avoid all these problems. If students are unwilling for uniform then they are free to stay at home. Enough of this.

I am 100% convinced, if the matter goes to the Supreme Court, the girls will win. The Government has very few options, and all of them bound to fail. I am not suggesting the uniform should not exist, but education is a right, and a lack of "proper uniform" does not diminish the right to education.

There is a saying - "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." People who talk about right often disregard rights of others. I can only pity these poor pawns who are misguided by vested interests. There is so much talk about constitutional rights here, but it appears no one is willing to go to court on this matter. This tells that the matter is raked up for anything but justice for the girls. If someone indeed goes to court and gets an order on supremacy of religious right over other rights in case of a conflict, it would be interesting. Going by past judgements it sounds very unlikely.

Madhav, you are speaking legally and the matter should be resolved by the court if the victim has valid concern. But after 2014 so many anti constitutional laws were challenged in the court by individuals and institutions but most of them were swept aside by giving unimaginable reasons and non compliance of documents etc etc. examples are farmers protest, CAA protests etc did not seek court justuce for lack of confidence in courts and courts themselves are showing weakness and complaining about deteriorating effect of law and some judges are lynched for giving verdict against the vested parties. So what is the guarantee the constitutional laws are upheld by the court at present and a fair justice is given to the deserving and rightful party????????……

Sanjay, The government made it mandatory to wear Hijab (Mask), that's covering chin, lips and nose. That means 60% of the hijab is taken care by the government, remaining is head only. May be in future circumstance may compel government to do this too.

Suggesting on-line classes in defence of uniform(ity) is a way of hijacking the hijab issue without any solution. Uniforms should be dispensed with in higher elementary and secondary schools and the simple rule of modesty without display of fashion or delicate body parts that do not arouse, should be the rule.

Hope everyone understands what is the meaning of Uniform... Each school has their said uniform pattern and everyone should follow it.. Be it a Hindu, Muslim, or Christian... it's a waste discussing here why does a Hindu wear bindi, or a Muslim wears a scarf... I hope all are educated enough to understand what is Uniform.... So everyone should follow the school rules.. If now they start wearing Scarf, obviously other caste people will start wearing their right clothes... So stop these politics, Don't waste time and go to school and learn something.... School administrations should be very strict in these matters... Of course in a Christian school, there will be a few prayers that will be related to Christianity, in Hindu schools, there will be a few prayers related to Hindus and In Muslim schools, of course, there is much more following of their own culture.. So if someone wants to follow strictly their culture... they are free to join their religious institutions and continue their studies... Why simply waste time. I studied in a Christian school and when we were young we were taken to church every Friday... No one opposed it as we have opted for Christian school.. I am a Hindu... If I or my family were not happy with this ritual of going to church, they would have admitted me to a Hindu school... But We all were wearing Unifrom... and there was uniformity.

@Jhanvi, You are free to follow what you think not objectionable to you. But don't impose your ideology/religion on others. Not everybody is as reluctant as you are to sacrifice their values. Regarding the rules, any Indian citizen can demand to allow him/her to follow his/her religious teaching since the constitution has given the right to follow the religion of his choice. And there are so many instances ehere rules have been amended in the past as well. Above all, there is no circular by the government that imposes uniforms for PU students. If wearing a shawl is also part of someone's religion, then let them wear it on the uniform. Why you should have any objection?. This will not make them aliens from other planet that all the other students keep on staring at them by completely ignoring their studies.

The misguided elements of Udupi created more problems to Muslim community. At present many degree colleges run by reputed management indirectly refusing admission to Muslim boys. In future, the resultentant situation will force these institutions to descriminate muslims at the time of admission. This will denay admission to muslim girls in the best institution of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District. My teacher at school taught me "religion is opium" . What a sad state of affairs. Education is supposed to give you brains to free yourself from the absurdities of religion and, these 5 women want to drag their life hidden behind a black veil. Is there no person with any sensibility left in the Muslim community who can talk sense to these women? If this their perspective of education and life, just quit college and sit at home. Get married, have bunch kids and have absolute no individual identity of their own (just like their mothers and grandmothers, for sure).

Let me just bring you back to the real world – ALL religious scriptures were written by MEN for the benefit of MEN. There is NOTHING godly about it. So, stop using them as a social sanction for sub-judication of women. The tried and tested mode of upliftment of society in general has been when women have been financially independent from their father and husbands, and education plays a big part in this. No one in society respects a parasite, and that is what these 5 women will most likely end up being if they cannot get out of their religious mentality.
