Mangalore, Dec 22: Enthusiasm to ride the trendy medium of travel –bicycle –broke the wintry chill in the city on Wednesday December 22 morning when many including elders, youth and officials joined the cycling event named ‘The Avon Big Greenathon’.

Scores of people who had registered with the hosts –the 92.7 Big FM city station –made it to the venue for a few miles of eco-friendly ride along with RJ Avinash and RJ Varsha, Radio Jockeys of the popular radio channel.

Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, Superintendent of Police inaugurated the cycle rally and said that the purpose of organizing it is to inculcate the habit of cycle riding among kids as it is apparent that the habit is vanishing in recent days. Cycling not only keeps you fit but also keeps the environment pollution-free, he added.

Mutalib, proprietor of Taj cycles, one of the chief guests said that ‘Greenathon’ is a big event of its kind being held across the country and expected to engage the citizens of India to one unique pledge to cycle for their good health. He added that inferiority complex about using cycle should be wiped out from our mind.

Raymond D’Souza, international weight lifter  and body builder, Bhojaraj Vamanjur, Tulu theatre artiste, Madan Sharma Ludhiana, group sales accounts manager, Sarfraz Ahmed of Big FM among others were present.

As many as 50 participants took part in the rally which commenced from Kadri Park and winded up at Bejai.

Just like most cities in India, cycling is on the decline. This is mainly due to rising wealth, greater availability of vehicles both two-wheelers as well as cars, increasing commute distances as the city size grows. The roads are designed without cyclist safety or convenience in mind, and growing vehicle numbers and speeds make it dangerous and difficult to cycle. The low-income groups and school students remain the largest users of cycles in the city.
However growing concerns about local pollution and global warming as well as a better understanding of the adverse effects of motorization on the livability of the city has led many groups to conduct cycle rallies. I wish that Sunday Cycle Rally should become regular feature during winter months. Schools, IT Companies and International Social Organisations like Rotary, Lions etc should promote cycling fellowship with the purpose of creating awareness of cycling at the school and educate them to better and safe cycling. They should sponsor T-Shirts, Caps and other goodies to attract more participants. It should be more organised with Starting/Finishing Gates with registration shamianas allotting number stickers to every participants. To make the event more attractive there should be few water-sachets distributing points and sponsored banners etc along the route of the rally. There should be prizes for the winners, certificates and shopping discount coupons for the participants etc.
