Colossal Gesture: Colaco's Rs 10 Lac Scholarships to Policemen's Kids

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, Dec 29: In a generous gesture, well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist Ronald Colaco has come forward to offer scholarships of Rs 1 lac each to 10 children of policemen serving under Dakshina Kannada rural police district and Mangalore City police commissionerate.

In all, scholarships worth Rs 10 lac will be presented to 10 meritorious children of police personnel in the two policing units, five each from standard 10th and second year PUC. The scholarships will help them pursue their higher education.

Making the announcement on Monday December 27, he said that it was his way of saying that the society was with the police and that it acknowledges their tireless efforts in serving the public. He also added that there was a need to pay attention to the education of the policemen's children and that they deserve better amenities which would enable them to lead decent lives.

Colaco had first made the offer to sponsor the education of children of police personnel under the Mangalore city police studying in the 10th standard. However, later on the advise of police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh he decided to include the entire Dakshina Kannada and extended the offer to second PUC students also.

Colaco has already asked Seemanth Kumar Singh to draw up a list of deserving candidates for the award and reiterated that the scholarships will be presented in due time without the need for any reminder.

You say, because police people are corrupt special schools should be started only for those wanting to be policemen.

Catholic priests and Bishops have been convicted of sexual crimes against children, which is more serious than police force corruption. Do you mean to say special schools should be started to those wanting to be priests and Bishops as well?

Yes indeed, it is a colossal noble gesture from Ronald Colaco and I'd like to congratulate him. But I thought, instead of helping just ten children, it would have been better if he had created a trust with that money and that would have taken care of educating many more children.

We Indians know how corrupt our Police officials are. If we are caught doing something wrong, we can easily get away by bribing the policeman who has caught us. Also, if we have money, we can easily bribe them and create false allegations against our enemy. How can we change this? How can we aim to have an honest police force? It is only through education. We should start a school for children who aspire to be in the Police force. Like National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune for cadets who want to build a career in the military, we should have a school/College exclusively for children who want to become policemen. Only children who pass out from this school/college should be made police officers. They should all start as police constables and then promoted as and when they pass exams. To root out corrupion, we also have to make sure that they are paid well. Policemen are corrupt not because they are bad but circumstances have made them bad. If they had enough money to take care of their family, I'm sure they would not accept bribes and do something wrong. If you see the pathetic state in which they currently live, I'm sure you will agree with me. So let us collectively do something to correct this.

It is really heartening to see how Mr Ronald Colaco has been reaching out to various sections of people. His contribution towards the education of the children of policemen in DK is a great act of service towards some of these talented boys and girls who will be able to pursue their education. I thank him for his generous gesture. I really wish more and more of our Manglaoreans come forward to educate bright young boys and girls, who otherwise may not have an opportunity to come up in life. I have always been saying that our country is blessed with human resource. So many young people…but it is not enough to have young people but we need to educate them, we need to create excellent facilities for their studies at all levels.…Anyone coming forward to help such children is helping towards building our country. God bless you Mr Colaco.

This is truly a thoughtful and unique gesture on the part of Mr. Ronald Colaco. The congregation of Policemen in Mangalore will remain grateful. We sincerely hope that the scholarships will encourge the children of police to utilize the Christian education that is available to them in and around Mangalore.

Our Catholic schools of Mangalore have produced some of the best scholars from the Hindu and Moslem community. By having the police children in our Catholic schools the police will have a greater attachment to the Catholic community. Educational values will siloverline the relations between all the religions and cultures in a secular society of India.

In addition to St.Agnes and St. Aloysius, we are also proud that we have our own Medical College and Engineering College in Mangalore. Every scholarship therefore can be interlinked with our own Catholic Institutions so as to derive the best benefit for the kindness of our heart.

Now that Mr.Colaco has taken the lead, for a noble cause, it will be good if more generous business persons would come forward to do the same to the less fortunate childrens of
    1. NRI's who are returning from Gulf without savings
    2. Tile factory workers
    3. Cashew factory workers
    4. Construction workers
    5. Agriculture workers
    6. Scavengers
    7. Domestic helpers
    8. Alcoholics
    9. Rickshow drivers
    10.Bus drivers
    11.Lorry drivers
    12.Bus cleaners
    13.Lorry cleaners
    14.Laundry workers
    15.Restaurant workers
    16.Beedi rolling workers
    17.Hand cart pullers
    18.Fish sellers
    19.Vegetable sellers
    20.Meat sellers
Since the list would not end, is it better not to segregate children on the basis of the professions of their their parents, but help those deserving children without descrimination based on parents professions.

Religious segregation is more than enough, why add professional descrimination as well.
