Mangaluru, Feb 16: Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar on Wednesday, February 16 said that as many as 28 students in two colleges of the city had been sent back home after they were denied entry in classrooms for wearing Hijab.
Pre-university and degree colleges reopened on Wednesday after days of being shut over the Hijab versus saffron shawl row. The high court which is still hearing the case had last week passed an interim order stating that until the final judgement is pronounced, students shall not be allowed to wear any religious attire to schools and colleges.
Addressing a press meet here, the police commissioner said that girls who came wearing Hijab were sent back home in two colleges, while in four others they were allowed into the class after they agreed to remove Hijab.
"Colleges have reopened, and friction over Hijab occured in six colleges. The colleges concerned denied entry to Hijab wearing students based on the high court's order. In four colleges, students removed Hijab and returned to class. Two Hijab wearing students in Dayanand Pai degree college and 26 in Pompei college returned home," he said.
A total of 22 Hijab wearing students in Mudipu college and 11 in Montepadavu college were allowed into classrooms after they agreed to remove Hijab.
The police commissioner also said that no incident of students wearing saffron shawls was reported in any of the colleges.
