Bengaluru, Feb 18: Karnataka chief minister (CM) Basavaraj Bommai has stated that there are no guidelines for giving permission to Madrassas for imparting religious education by any of the government departments in the state.
He was replying to a question raised by BJP legislator, Muniraju Gowda, during the question hour in the legislative council on Thursday February 17.
The CM noted that Madrassas follow a system of educating the students in Islamic religious principles and the way the followers of Islam have to conduct themselves in their day-to-day life.
"The Madrassa education is aimed at teaching the students about the ways of life as advised by the Prophet based on what the holy Quran says. People who are mentally stable and those who know how to read and write are eligible to get admission into the Madrassas," he explained.
"Interested boys and girls can undergo this education. Madrassas teach recital of Quran by heart, Hafiz-e-Quran three to four years course where Kannada, English and computer education are imparted, teaching of Arabic, Persian languages and their grammar, Riyyazi (maths), philosophy, seven to eight years Aleem course where philosophy of the teachings of the Prophet, logic, philosophy, English, Kannada, one year Fazeel course where postgraduate degree in Hadith expertise is given, postgraduate course in philosophy (master in Fikha) which is called Mufti course, are available in the Madrassas. Education is imparted there in Arabic and Urdu languages," he explained.
The chief minister revealed that the directorate of minorities has not been giving any grants to the children studying in Madrassas to get religious education. But one time grant of ten lac rupees is given per institution to Madrassas run by the Wakf Board in the state for modernisation, formal education, for computer training, to provide facilities like water, toilets, residential accommodation, computers, library and furniture, he said.
In the year 2019-20, a sum of Rs 29.46 crore, five crore rupees in 2020-21 and Rs 3.74 crore in 2021-22 have been provided to the institutions. 622 Madrassas in the state have been given additional grants of five lac rupees, he said.
