Sourav Ganguly Goes Unsold at IPL-4 Auction

Bangalore, Jan 8 (IANS) Former India captain Sourav Ganguly became the first player to be unsold in the players' auction for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here Saturday.

Ganguly, who was in Kolkata Knight Riders, had a base price of $400,000. He failed to attract any buyer at the auction being held at the ITC Royal Gardenia. Ganguly was earlier placed in the $200,000 price bracket, but he later increased his base price to $400,000, which is the highest bracket for marquee players in the league.

Ganguly, who was the oldest Indian player up for auction at 38 years and six months, had a tough time with Knight Riders and was also removed from captaincy in the second edition in South Africa. Ganguly, however, came back to lead the side after Dave Whatmore took over the coaching from John Buchanan last year.

But Knight Riders were not interested in Ganguly and released him for the fourth edition.

During Ganguly's auction, the spotlight was on the Knight Riders' table, but the team's think tank looked down as his name was repeatedly called before he went to the unsold basket.

There were also reports that Sahara-owned Pune Warriors may buy him at a base price, but they may have changed their mind after Ganguly hiked the price.

Kumble is the smartest guy. He opted out of IPL 4 as he had a doubt of buyer. DADA should have done the same. ONLY SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST WILL be there in 20-20.Old is not gold here.

I expected this in this IPL.

Dada should retire. He is past his date anyway.

Most teams are wary of the huge sized ego of Dada and they may worry that he is difficult to get along with for other team members/management.

Ganguly was a excellent caoptain and good batsman. Its because of Chappel this guy got jammed up.Chappel played everything to finish Ganguly. Its a shame we we indians appointed a unfit australian Chappel for this prestigeous post who was instrumental in screwing Indian team . Until chappel came ganguly was in drivers seat.Chappel finished this Guy totally. His contemporaries are still playing in IPL . Now its best for ganguly to retire. I congratulate Indian coach from south Africa as well as Indian players for bringing India to current stage.

It's almost the end of 'Dada'giri! He should have read the writing on the wall. Despite all his talent and credentials, he scores almost Zero when it comes to attitude. It was quite clear that if KKR had left him out, no one else would take him in too for he would not accept anything less than captaincy! And SRK would have shown him the door much before if it was possible for him. He was truly inspirational captain once but not the one whom youngsters should emulate at any point. Adil, you got it wrong. If it was Test team, he should have been booted out first because he was never a great test player apart from his bang-bang debut. He was one of the greatest one-day players for sure and not Test. Even if someone picks the greatest Test XI of India, Ganguly would not find a place in it. His problem is that he can't be a coach or mentor even like Fleming. I would beg to differ from Mr Percy regarding 'Oldies'. The youngsters should push the so called oldies by their performance They promise so much in the beginning but within first year of their emergence at the highest level, they fade out. They lack not the talent but hard work and committment of the oldies. Most of them are tigers on sub-continent flat pitches but are caught unawres on bouncy and fast pitches of SA, Australia test of a cricketer. Those who can sustain highest level for 450 overs and 9 sessions over 5 days of test cricket and for years are the real cricketers.

Perhaps the shirt which he swung during the finals of 'that' match might fetch him that base price. These cricketers are crazy guys that they do not want to retire, like politicians. They will play till they are thrown out. Not only in IPL, even in 20-20, 50-50 and Test Matches the 'Oldies' have influence to be in the team as long as they want, no matter what their performance is. The only reason they come out is when they are caught in some 'Scam' like match fixing. There are so many youngsters waiting to get a chance in the team. They wait and wait and get retired remaining outside the boundary line itself. A very pathetic situation with the massive population of India that BCCI find difficult to fetch new faces in the team. 'ALL MONEY POWER & POLITICS' .

Sorry Dada. I hope its time U accept the fact that U R an aging lion now.if this was a ion for a Test Team,I would have been the first to condemn this decision of ignoring a legend like U.I hope a lot of them will agree to this fact.
T20 requires somebody who could play their part for the entire 3hrs of power packed performance, than just scoring a quickfire 40-60 & giving it all back to the opposition with some poor & pathetic fielding.
Well done Mr kumble, U R really a Clever master.
dada should have abstained from the auction process than increasing his base price ,which sounded like a Joke than anything else.
hope normalcy & common sense prevails in west bengal than coming out with a childish & ridiculous tweet from a otherwise mature sportsman like Mahesh Bhupathi.
    Jai ho IPL.
But yes, we will miss Mr Modi.
Yeah its Lalit Modi i m talking about, Not anybody else.
