Mangalore, Jan 10: Speaking after performing ‘Bhoomi Puja’ for the underground drainage project being executed in Ullal town near here at a cost of Rs 65.71 crore on Sunday January 9, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, explained that this project is part of the government’s initiatives to develop infrastructural facilities all over the state.

He noted that underground drainage system is an answer to various ills including health problems and water pollution, which are normally seen in towns without underground drainage system.  The minister also sought full support and cooperation of the citizens of Ullal for the effective implementation of the project.

He requested the people to realize that in the initial stages, projects like these create numerous problems for the locals. “If the people create hurdles in the implementation of the project, in the long run, they alone will suffer. They need to realize this aspect,” he added.

He reminded the local administration that the responsibility for the proper execution of the project lies with it, and pointed out that in certain places, because of ineffectiveness of the local bodies, projects had got stranded midway.

MLA, U T Khader, presided over the programme. Coastal Development Authority chairman, B Nagaraj Shetty, Mangalore Urban Development Authority chairman, Dr Madhava Bhandary, Ullal municipal president, Basil D’Souza, vice president, Bhavani, chief officer, B C Sadanand, and others were present.

L Anand, executive engineer of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s city division, welcomed. Assistant executive engineer, Srinivas Raghavendra, provided details of the project in a nutshell. U T Khader delivered introductory address, while Abdul Sattar Ullal compered the programme.

    This is a real joke.See the experience of my relative.
    last Nov (09)the MCC gave out a dicktat that all houses on the street must be connected to the laid drainage system by end Dec(09) or face a penalty. A contractor came by(or was sent?) got 14/16 houses to sign up thru him to get the job done and he did so at a high cost to the residents.
    Imagine the shock & surprise when after all this was done in a haste, an engineer from MCC comes & warns everyone not to put the line through as a section of the pipeline was not completed- warned that heavy penaly would be imposed if the lines were put through- joke of new year 2010.
    Well the joke still continues as 14 months later the connection is still not put through- joke of new year 2011.
    The roads too have not been repaired after the pipeline laying.
    Such is our infrastructure top priority,dear Mr Minister.
    Finish one job before going to the next not leave jobs half done which seems to be the norm over the last few years.
