Bangalore, Jan 18: As many as seven new lay Catholic members, committed to work for fostering and promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life in the Catholic church were recently inducted at a solemn youth mass in St Patrick’s Church in Bangalore.

Archbishop Bernard Moras blessed the new Serrans and lauded them for furthering the cause of the Catholic church.

The Archbishop said all Catholics were called to work for vocations and he thanked the Serra Club for the work they are doing for the Church.

The Serra Club is an international Lay organization, recognized by the Pope. It has over 28,000 members in 38 countries around the world.

Serra is named after the Franciscan missionary, Junipero Serra, Founder of many of the California Missions. It was founded in 1935 in Seattle Washington by a small group of Catholic laymen who saw the need to foster vocations to religious life, both by recruiting vocations and by supporting those religious in their active careers.

Most clubs meet twice a month at either lunch or dinner meetings. Many clubs also have a Mass before each meeting. The short meeting programmes are used to plan activities to support vocations and also enrich the spiritual lives of the members through fellowship and by having qualified speaker guests on spiritual matters. Originally a male club, Serra is open to women for several years and many of the present members are married couples.

What a great idea to form the SERRA CLUB and encourage laity to be a part of the MISSION.

Good and dedicated priests are the need of the day. They have to carry out and carry on the work connected with The Catholic Church and indeed without good priests The Catholic Church cannot continue. It is everyone's obligation to support this great cause.

Archbishop Bernard has taken a step in the right direction. I am not quite sure whether there are any Serra Clubs in other parts of India. May be this is installed for the first time in India. It is my sincere hope that the laity connected with this Club will succeed in fostering vocations to PRIESTHOOD.

I join scores of people in saying kudos to Archbishop Bernard.

    Dear friends,

Archbishop should first initiate steps to cleanse the Clergy so that it becomes evangelically attractive for new vocations. As the Roman Catholic Church stands today, bringing new vocations is like pouring a glass of clean water into a bucket of dirty water. Firstly, the Clergy must introspect and check where they are drifting away from the Holy Gospel, take evangelization seriously for once and reform it as laid down in the Holy Gospel and then involve the laity. Without that it is like pouring milk on the rock. Regards
