Mangaluru, Apr 16: After the high court vacated the stay on the demolition of the Central Market, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) resumed the demolition work from April 13.

On Friday April 15, the demolition work was almost completed. As per the information from sources, 80% of demolition work was completed on Friday. The demolition work is likely to be completed on Saturday.

It is learnt that stones and iron will be segregated. Later, the waste will be disposed from the spot. After the complete demolition of the building, construction of a new market under the Smart City Project will begin. Tender is being floated for the construction of a new market and it is in its final phase.

The Central Market building had a history of 62 years. The MCC had issued notice to vendors on April 2, 2020. On April 4, a paper publication regarding demolition was published. Later, the demolition work began. A few vendors approached the high court to bring a stay order on the work. Following the order from the court, the work was stopped. As the court vacated the stay, the MCC resumed the demolition work.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar said, "The demolition work is in progress. One fourth of the work is pending now.”
