Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 8: The election for the zilla panchayat here will be held on Wednesday February 9, while the heads of Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala taluk panchayats will be chosen on February 10, 11, and 14, respectively.

It is gathered that the BJP will be announcing the names of the presidents and vice presidents for the zilla panchayat and three taluk panchayats in the district, later in the day.

It is almost certain that Katpady Shankar Poojary, zilla panchayat member from Kaup constituency, will get the zilla panchayat presidentship, while Jyoti Shetty from Mandarti constituency is likely to be made the vice-president. The post of the zilla panchayat president has been earmarked for backward class – A category, while that of the vice-president will go to a female candidate from general category.

Election for the posts of the president and the vice-president of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat (DKZP) will be conducted at 3 pm today. Nominations can be filed from 11 am onwards. Divisional commissioner from Mysore, M V Jayanti, will act as the returning officer for this election. In all likelihood, Shailaja K T from Vittal or Asha Timmappa Gowda from Bellare will get the party’s nod. It is said that the leaders of the BJP, who met at the party office in Mangalore for finalizing the names for the two posts in DKZP for long since 7 pm on Monday, failed to arrive at a consensus.
