Moodbidri, Feb 9: The three-day ‘5th Western National Open Karate Championship 2011’ concluded on Sunday February 6.

Abhayachandra Jain, MLA presided over the function and commended Western Institute of Technology on having conducted it on such a large scale. Walter Stephan Mendes later honored all the referees who took part in the championship.

Sandeep Salvi, the only World Karate Federation (WKF) judge, who was the chief referee for the championship praised the event and equaled it to any international competition as the programme was conducted on 8 courts simultaneously with over 60 judges and referees and more than 2,000 participants from over 20 states in India.



























It was the first time in Mangalore, Karnataka, that a karate competition was organized as per WKF rules and regulations. All participants were privileged to receive free training from international trainers from Tibet, China. The facilities provided at the championship were of exceptional standards with free food for all participants and visitors on all days and boarding and accommodation of high quality provided for all without charge.

The programme was recorded and telecast live on V4 channel on all three days. Western Karate School International(WKSI) was also formally inaugurated during the event and this school will function as per WKF rules.

The president of Western Institute of Technology said that the purpose was to promote martial arts and to make students confident and disciplined. He added that Western Institute of Technology is offering a 6-month certificate course and 1 year diploma and degree in martial arts such as Karate and Taekwondo from Indian University.

Goshin-Ryu style of Indian karate that belongs to Sensei: Ishwar Kateel got the overall championship with cash award of Rs 10,000 and Western Karate School International(WKSI) got second highest with the team championship.

Cusheel Lona D’Souza of Western Karate School International(WKSI) got the individual champion prize with 3 gold and 2 silver medals – Individual Kata 1st-(Gold), Group Kata 1st-(Gold), Weapon Kata 1st-(Gold), Individual Kumite 2nd-(silver), Special event-Individual Group Kata 2nd-(silver). Morgan William won the Master Category Championship. Both Sensei. Ihwar Kateel and individual champion Cusheel Lona D’souza were honored onstage.
