Karnataka move to inspect syllabus of Christian schools likely to stir controversy

Bengaluru, Apr 27 (IANS): The Karnataka education department's direction to Block Education Officers to inspect the syllabus of all Christian schools in the state over making reading of Bible compulsory is likely to stir a controversy.

Education Minister B.C. Nagesh had given the directions after the case of the Clarence High School allegedly making reading of the Bible compulsory came out.

The exercise is likely to be opposed by progressive thinkers and the Opposition Congress party. Nagesh has stated that no school in the state can preach religion, including minority institutions. If any institute has made preaching of religion compulsory, it is against the Karnataka Education Act.

He has warned that if any violation is found in the syllabus strict legal action will be initiated against the schools. There is no room for schools teaching central syllabus to include religious matters, he added.

Considering the sensitivity of the issue and the present situation in the state, sources in the education department said that the exercise is bound to take a communal turn.

Most of the Christian schools have included the Christian value system as part of the curriculum. These inclusions have been made and taught to children since decades. However, going strictly by the law it will be against the rules, sources said.

Nagesh had stated that there is information that schools run by Christian managements are not giving admissions to children refusing to read the Bible. The Opposition leaders who make a hue and cry over the issue of a lesson on Tipu Sultan, hijab are turning a blind eye to this issue, he added.

The ruling BJP alleged to be pursuing aggressive Hindutva, has taken another step in this direction with regard to teaching of the Bible in Christian schools. The issue is all set to snowball into a major controversy in the coming days, said sources in the education ministry.

Last 100 years everything going smoothly - Education institutes -- run by Christian - The Christians are below 3 % whole of India -- Population wise -- Now all of a sudden a majority feels threatened by a well serving minority -- it is sheer all in all vote bank politics-- -- many are having low qualifications in the ruling dispensation -- hence such directions given-- Needless meddling on a community which has contributed immensely -- Schools-- colleges -- hospitals -- nursing -- many have reached the Top -- across communities -- BANK MD's -- ARMY chiefs and other defence services -- and other fields -- and also Sports -- music etc --all was available at reasonable costs -- high quality education -- without bias -- Today many institutions -- non catholic-- take donations for admissions into Kindergarten itself --which used to cover the whole fees -- when studying in Christian institutions -- from kindergarten to Pre univ -- So all communities have benefitted -- without even having an in depth knowledge of the bible etc -- or trying to suppress other religions in schools --or make one feel inferior--

Trouble makers and haters. How much you can harass the Christians. We never give up in doing good to everyone despite of your hate on Christians. We follow the footsteps of Christ. Christ teaching is one of best on entire world. It takes a courage to follow him.

When Hijab issue popped up it was all education first and 90% here asked that the girls are doing blunders hen they wanted to follow the culture. But now when the table turned against them I see a panic button. This is a lesson, be aware what you comment , you get in return what you enforce on others. What we need here is a collective approach and selective approach, constitution is same for all

There is nothing to panic or worry. Be it in Karnataka, Maharashtra or any other state for over 100 years the church owned schools had been imparting religious education to Christians and Moral Science to students of other communities and it will continue for years to come. Since independence there had been no opposition to this system either from parents or the govt. Why make a hue and cry now? This cannot be compared with hijab or naqab which is a non-educational issue and which is concerned with school uniform.

Dear Nawaz.....no one is pressing panic button. Because its false propoganda. When false things are published, naturally we have to rise up. Suppose, if any Christian school, distributes bible OR teach bible during class hours, we being Christians condemn this act. They should proceed according to the guidelines put forward by the education dept. Because schools have children belonging to different communities. I too said wrong if this particular school indulged in distributing bibles. Bible is a holy book. We should not handle it so easily. IF school authorities are doing so, they are insulting our holy scriptures and we condemn it. We will not justify such acts. Secondly, no christian schools will teach bible during religion class. Christian students are taught catechism based on moral values...a seperate small book like any other subject. Other students have moral science classes...and in degree all are taught VALUE EDUCATION in Christian colleges. Hijab issue dont compare with this. They are asked to be in uniform inside the classroom and not outside the classroom.

The Hindus cannot afford to make enemies with all other communities Just because of all the radical parties instigated by the ruling BJP party. We all have to live as humans first, then as Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. All of us are dependent on each as a society in India unlike in western Or Muslim or African countries where they do not differentiate One another on their faith All the Hindus in Karnataka should learn to live in the belief of love, peace, and happiness to maintain harmony and not to get instigated By these BJP radicals who are spreading hate and crime.

Khichidi pakaayi hai, abb khaao ! If the parents are asked to take their wards away to schools of their religious convenience, who is at loss? The government, or the parents/students ? Christian Schools will still sail through, they won't go bankrupt.

Ask your nearest Bjp party worker or leader which school he studied or which school his children are studying...At least 75% will tell you it is a christian school. Then ask them about this report...If they are telling the truth they will tell this report is baseless and they and their kids are still following their own religion... Can clearly see why some people and organizations want to always drag public attention away from the issues which we all really need to solve...
