Udupi: St Mary’s Island entry to be banned if deaths increase – Municipality commissioner

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Apr 28: Dr Uday Shetty, secretary of Beach development committee and commissioner of city municipality said that warning has been given to beach maintenance people that entry to St Mary’s Island will be prohibited if one more tourist dies due to negligence.

He was responding to a query of municipality member Ramesh Kanchan who raised the issue of ‘no safety’ in Malpe beach and frequent deaths that have occurred at St Mary’s Island.

Ramesh Kanchan accused, “Life guards are less in number on Malpe beach. In addition, when tourists are taken to St Mary’s Island on boat many more people than the stipulated numbers are taken on board of the boat violating the rules. Even life jackets are not provided. Just in a week’s time six people have died. The person who has the contract to maintain the beach is very negligent.”

Replying to Ramesh Kanchan’s accusation, Uday Shetty said, “Already a meeting in this regard has taken place under the leadership of DC. It has been decided to take strict action against those who violate the rules. The boat ride conductors are warned. Discussion is held with regards to selfie points and placing warning boards. Not more than 70 people can travel in a boat. Only 500 people can be present at a time at the Island. If the incident recurs, entry to Island will be prohibited.”

Members of many wards said, “In city area roads and other areas are dug for Varahi project, which has caused drinking water issue. Mescom also cuts water pipes and creates problems for the pubic. Engineers of the city municipality are unaware of these works. All pending works should be finished before the onset of monsoon.”

Some other members also accused that under the limits of city municipality many unauthorised works of making shop within shop and renting it out is taking place. But city municipality is unaware of this as well. Revenue department should conduct operation in this regard.”

Environmental engineer Sneha said, “10 bio digester mobile toilets have been procured under Challenge Fund project for city municipality at a cost of Rs 50 lac. The maintenance of this will be outsourced. They will be placed at Malpe, Beedinagudde and Saralebettu government properties where daily wagers live in sheds. Owners who hire daily wage labourers should provide them basic infrastructure. Otherwise action can be taken against such owners.”

Laxmi Manjunath Kola and vice president of city municipality were present.

Even the gate to the Malpe Sea Walk is broken and thrown to one side. The tiles on the sea walk walls are already falling off. God only knows when repairs (if any) will be carried out. While we were there we saw the packed boats plying to and from St. Mary's island to the accompaniment of blaring music. The charge for this boat ride is Rs 300. From what we could see from the shore, the passengers were wearing life jackets.

Cynthia, They don't care when "Action will be taken" is written. ONLY applies to the joker person who prepared the placard or notice board with different shades of colours. And by the way who has the time to read it. It's gone for a toss and is only symbolic as a formality. Instead you will listen more of this verbally.

Very true.... i agree with this. Why i said this is, a few dsys ago i had been to one govt office. Just note the timing that i write here...10 to 1 and 2.30 to 4. But, to my utter surprise, very few employees came on time and were seated....but, not doing the work. Rest of thr employees have no proper time at all. On inquiry, fattt comes the reply saying, i had to go to the other office etc etc...which other office??? Till 12 in another office? After coming, drinking water, removing charger/mobile...keeping for charge and so many other things. But, I am shocked to read one board displayed just outside the office mentioning..." if employees come late to work, or if they do not do the work, or if they ask bribe, or get into arguments...(reasons like this) SHOULD BRING TO THE NOTICE OF THE FOLLOWING OFFICERS IMMEDIATELY..." ...and given telephone nos of 3 higher rank officials.. I tried to call, phone was switched off....other phone was ringing. Inspite of displaying one big board in bold letters with telephone nos. No one is scared. Beliye holavannu meydare ?? Remember this saying ??

"Action will be taken"....this line is only in writing. Everywhere corruption/bribe/negligence of duty/maintaining irregular timing by the govt employees/delay in completing the work. Those who work in govt employees never give correct information to the customers.......

Reducing the number of visitors won't help if tourists are oversmart and refuse to listen to the coast guards warnings.
