Kundapur, May 30: The Devadiga Society Service Association submitted an appeal to the assistant commissioner of the taluk demanding rigorous imprisonment to accused Azeez and Salma, who were allegedly responsible for the suicide of Shilpa Devadiga, a young girl from a financially poor family of Uppinakudru. They have also demanded compensation to be given to the family from the state government.

In their appeal, Devadiga association said, “Shilpa, who was working in a cloth shop was dragged into the net of love by Azeez, who was already married to Salma. He had physical relations with her and took her photographs. He threatened her that he will upload them on social media. He wanted Shilpa to get converted to Islam. This made Shilpa to kill herself by consuming rat poison. Thorough investigation needs to be done on Azeez. There is a possibility that this network is widespread. Accused should be hanged to death.”

AC Raju, who received the appeal, said that he will forward it to the higher officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Shankar Ankadakatte, leader of Devadiga Society, said, “We learnt that police have arrested the accused. We congratulate the police in that regard. Comprehensive investigation needs to take place in this case. This case is serious. Innocent girls are cheated through Love Jihad. Accused should be subjected to rigorous imprisonment and affected family should be given compensation from the government.”

Vijay Kodavoor, president of Udupi city Devadiga society, said, “Azeez who instigated Shilpa Devadiga to commit suicide should be sentenced to death. This incident should be a lesson to those who carry out such heinous acts. By deep investigation of Azeez there are chances that more skeletons will tumble out of his cupboard. We should distance ourselves from people who support these kind of culprits. Our religion should be alert.”

Nagaraja Rayappanamata, president, Kundapur taluk Devadiga Society Service Association, Gauri Devadiga, Sanjeeva Devadiga, Jagadeesha Devadiga, Rajesh Devadiga Kambadakone, Chandrashekhara Devadiga Koteshwara, Narasimha Devadiga, Charan Devadiga, Udaya Herikere, Ananda, Srimati Devadiga, Chandrashekahar Devadiga, Srinivasa Devadiga, Ravi Uppinakudru and Karunakara Balkoor were present.

All of them visited the house of Shilpa Devadiga after submitting the appeal, consoled the family members and assured them of their support.
