M'lore: Private Participation to be Allowed in Upkeep of Roads

Mangalore, Mar 6 (The Hindu): Mangalore City Corporation has offered to entrust the maintenance of 22 stretches on main roads and five parks in the city to any organisation, firm, industry or bank for three years.

It has mooted the concept of “own your road and own your park'' to implement its proposal.

Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash told presspersons on Saturday that the parties interested in maintaining them would be allowed to display signboards on both sides of the road free of cost. Such parties could display the signboards at a distance of 250 m on each side.

Mr. Vijayaprakash said the corporation required Rs. 5.50 crore to maintain the 22 stretches annually. As far as parks were concerned, the annual maintenance cost per acre of land was Rs. 2.91 lakh. He said the organisations interested in the proposal could approach the corporation for details. It had uploaded details on its website www.mangalorecity.gov.in.

Mr. Vijayaprakash said that such parties would be required to maintain the pavements and medians. They would have to take up the restoration work of roads, mark zebra crossings and mark bus bay parking.

    Yet another scam.
It says the contractors for the roads will be allowed to put sign board and hoarding at a distance of 250 m???? What does this mean???
Our road width is max about 120 feet. As far as i have seen as i have travelled quite a bit i have seen only traffic signs on the road sides.
The ad boards are only at shopping centres and huge boards in lands so that it does not obstruct driver's view for the road signs.
Anyway if it works good luck

It will work out verywell in the interest of corporation, public and the Company/corporate,this is PPP, (Public Private partneship), this concept would generate more and more revenues to the corporation,as there will be hoard to grab the sopt by corporates every year during renewal of agreement.I am sure if this succeeds would be a model concept for entoire India
