Mangalore: People Pay Last Respects to Prof Arvind Joshi

Mangalore, Mar 8: The mortal remains of Prof Arvind Joshi, principal of Vijaya College Mulky, who lost his life in an accident, were placed on Monday March 7 evening at the college premises to enable the general public to bid adieu to the popular figure.  Over 3,000 people made a beeline to the college to pay their last respects to him.

Mulky town panchayat president, B M Asif, retired college principals, Nambiar and Sam Maben, Mulky Buntara Sangha president, Muralidhar Bhandary, Billava Sangha president, Raghu Suvarna, Rotary Club president, Balachandra Sanil, and scores of other dignitaries were among those who visited the college. The college students brought the portrait of the late Joshi in a procession from the college to his residence.

A programme to pay tributes to the noble soul was also organized at the college premises on Monday. Secretary of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dr H S Ballal, hailed Joshi as an honest and straight forward person, whose loss is difficult to fill. Administrative officer of Manipal Academy of General Education, Dr H S Shanataram, said that Prof Joshi not only served the college well, but also maintained a cordial relationship with the academy. He heaped praises on the departed soul for giving total facelift to the image of the college in the region during his tenure, and registering commendable improvement in all spheres. President of the college governing council, Dr Achut Kudva, announced that the library building coming up in the college premises will be named after Prof Joshi.

Academy registrar, K V Prabhu, member of the board of trustees, K P Madhyastha, governing council members, Aravind Punja and Vishwanath Kamath, former MLA, Somappa Suvarna, and a number of others participated in the meeting. Vice-principal, Prof Narayan, presented the programme.

In the meanwhile, Mulky unit of Car Drivers and Owners Association did not operate their vehicles on Monday as a mark of respect to Vijayakumar, car driver, who also died in the above accident. Vijayakumar’s body was handed over to his family members in Sullia.

Nagaraj Nayak and Roshan Shetty, who were injured in the accident, are recovering in a hospital in the city.
