Mangalore, Mar 13: The institution day and graduation ceremony of Father Muller Charitable Institutions and the inauguration of the year-long silver jubilee celebration of Father Muller College of Nursing took place on Sunday March 13 at 5 pm at Father Muller Stadium.

The programme commenced with the graduates’ procession from the medical college premises.

A total of 458 students from the college and school of nursing, homeopathic medical college, medical college allied health science college, and college of speech graduated on the occasion which also marked the 170th birth anniversary of founder Fr Augustus Muller.

Union law minister Dr Veerappa Moily was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he called upon the young doctors to inculcate the service mentality and to consider the needs of the present time in the medical field.

“Though primary treatment for various ailments has achieved its purpose in our country, a major number of death cases are reported among cancer and TB patients”, said Moily. He also pointed out that large numbers of patients are dying due to their poor financial status and the youth should work on this issue. Moily told young doctors and medical professionals to regard Mother Teresa as their role model.

Dr Ramananda Shetty, vice chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, was the guest of honour. Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza presided over the programme.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, welcomed the gathering and read out the annual report. Maria Punnen, FMCON, graduate representative, expressed her opinion. Presentation of awards was done by Dr Shetty. Bishop D’Souza, president of FMCI, handed over mementos to the dignitaries. Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator, FMMC & FMCON, delivered the vote of thanks. The institutional anthem was sung on the occasion and the FMCON documentary was screened. Entertainment programmes by students of FMCI followed.

Congratulations to Bishop Aloysius and the enitre team of Fr. Mullers. I wish Fr. Muller was alove to witness this great event. Even late Fr. Reginald Pinto, Fr. Marian Fernandes, Dr. Venkat Rao, Dr. Mathews, Dr. Modi would have been thrilled to see the progress of Fr. Mullers. My own father and mother would have been honored to witness the change. We have come a long way ever since Father Augustus Muller commenced operations in a humble way dispensing homeopathy medicines probably under the shade of a tree treating poor patients of Mangalore and suburbs over 130 years ago. I am sure he is watching the progress of his dream child from above. What he started as a small challenging venture has grown in different dimensions and virtually The Homeopathy Medical College and Hospital of FMCI is rated as the best in the country. On the other side departments in terms of surgery and medicines have shown phenomenal growth thanks to the foresight of the past directors who have guided the destiny of this great institution. The present management presided over by Rev. Father Patrick Rodrigues and duly supported by Father Denis D'Sa, Father Richard Coelho, Father Prakash D'Souza, Father Vincent Saldanha and others continues to maintain the progress.

All this portends an era of growth and it is hoped that FMCI will soon be rated as the pioneer teaching Institution and Hospital in India.

I have had the privilege of being closely associated with FMCI for over three decades and even earlier as a child I was treated as a patient by none other than Dr. L.P.Fernandes lovingly termed as Lorsab who I recall was driven by his faithful driver Camil in a motor cycle with a side car.

Kudos to the present team who are all working hard to keep the flag of the FLAGSHIP of the Diocese flying high.
