Mangalore, Mar 14: Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police (SP), Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, said that he has already discussed the issue of Madesnana ritual, a procedure that is in vogue since long, practised by devotees during the Shashti annual festival at Subrahmanya temple. He promised to provide a forum for debate on this ritual by talking to the district deputy commissioner two to three months before the next Shashti festival.

He was speaking after presiding over a monthly meeting to receive petitions from people belonging to scheduled castes and tribes, organized on Sunday March 13 at the district police office here on Sunday March 13. Additional SP, Prabhakar, and Puttur assistant SP, Dr Rohini Katoch, were present.

Dalit Sangharsh Samiti leader, S P Anand, took up the issue of an order issued by the government recently, directing the employees working in the hostels being run by the social welfare department, to report early for duties and leave office late in the evening. He said that this order has been creating various problems for the hostel employees, and wanted reversion to previous duty hours. He also told the SP that a youth named Nagesh had collected an amount of Rs 60,000 from a girl, by promising her to procure employment as village accountant. After a complaint of cheating was filed in Venur police station, the case was settled amicably, after Nagesh promised to give the money back. He said that the girl has received only Rs 10,000 out of the promised amount. He also complained that all the cases of atrocities on scheduled castes and tribes in Sullia region are settled through mediation through the interference of a few politicians and middlemen, and that this results in injustice to the affected families.

Reacting to the problems, the SP asked the policemen to register criminal cases in all such incidents. A number of people raised issues like disturbing peace by using microphone during late nights, unnatural death of a dalit, and murder of a person near Mulky.

The members also urged the SP to ensure that when they dial 100, they should be able to contact the police stations in taluk headquarters or control rooms. The SP said that he will try to find out a solution by speaking to BSNL officials.
