Mangalore: Rs 400 Cr Netravati Diversion Project Being Readied, Not Harmful to Coast – Moily

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 14: “The Netravati Diversion Project proposed to be executed with an outlay of Rs 400 crore will not harm the coastal districts in any way.  This is in fact, not a project aimed at diverting water from River Netravati. The excess water that flows through the Western Ghats is planned to be diverted to benefit people from water-starved districts," said union minister for law M Veerappa Moily.

He was speaking to reporters during his visit to the city on Sunday March 13 to participate in the diamond jubilee celebrations of Mangalore airport. " The project is still in preliminary stage. Technical survey is yet to be conducted. Before deciding about the implementation of the project, all aspects of the issue including problems that might be faced by the people living on state’s coast, will be taken into account,” he assured.

He criticized Jaganmohan Reddy of behaving childishly, as if he was the heir apparent to the post of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh upon the death of his father and former Chief Minister, Rajashekhar Reddy. “He has built a regional party by using the name of his father. Regional parties do not have any future. He is behaving in a way that can tarnish the image of his father and the Congress party,” Moily added.

He said the state government had not extended an official invitation to him for Vishwa Kannada Sammelan held in Belgaum. “Even though I am a politician, I have done considerable work for Kannada. At least for courtesy sake, they should have invited me. When I was invited to the World Investors’ Meet, I participated in it. I am repentant over that now, as the scams and corruption scandals involving the BJP leaders came in the open thereafter. To cover up their misdeeds, the state government has organized Vishwa Kannada Sammelan”, he felt.

Divertion of the Netravati would result in large scale destruction of the ecology of the western Ghat also increse the landslides & destruction of forest. We have to do our bit & oppose such projects at any cost

    Dear friends,

I am sure, almost all writers expressing their opinion here are as much ignorant about the macro objective and technicalities of the project as I myself am. One goes to the extent of accusing that the project is intended to divert water to Chikkaballapur, he needs to go to III std for Geography class. Statements opposing or supporting the project by religious or community or political leaders all have hidden agenda in them. Technocrats will study the project, beauraucrats will assess it and finally politicians will endorse or reject it depending on the feasibility and viability. Why do we make huge issue out of it.

One thing is sure, if the project is diverted inward land, that much rain water will be harvested for agriculture or human consumption. All what we need to ensure is that forest or green land is not distroyed along the diverted route. When we are distroying so much landscape in the pretext of industrial and residential development, why do we raise objections on a project intended for water conservation?

    Regards
    Lawrence Saldanha Kanajar

One can't believe what the politicians are saying. Their hidden agenda is always in their self interest.

There is not even an iota of truth in what Mr. Moily has said.

Netravati diversion project will definitely have adverse effects of coastal districts.

Where are our other politicians? Please speak up. Let the truth come out.

We will never come to roads for any public cause. Fellow citizans, it is time. Please don't allow this project to begin.

I am surprised by ministers comment, the project name it self is "Netravati Diversion Project" and he says it does not impact coastal region. Its high time state/center shares the project detail with public instead of just saving its harmless. Eminent people like Shree Veerendra Heggade have opposed this project, there is something the govt. is hiding...

Mr Moodbidri Veerappa Moily diversion of NETHRAVATHI RIVER may have wider impact on us with regarding to drinking water and agricultural usesage. In the expense of DK, it should not be done.H.E Dr Veerendra Heggde,Seer Pejavar Swamiji and other enviornmentalists were already opposed this project and being TULUVA,you should be more inclind to us than others.if this project does not affect anyway to us then only it should be implemented addressing all our shortcomings due to this project.
