Mangalore, Mar 17: Shishir Hathwar, who hails from coastal Karnataka, has clinched the Guinness World Record meant for ‘fastest backward spelling of 50 words’. Shishir has since long, been mastering the art of spelling words found in the dictionary backwards.

Shishir succeeded in uttering correct spellings of 20 six-letter words, 15 seven-letter words, and 15 eight-letter words backwards without pausing, in one minute 22 seconds in November last in Bangalore. These words, spelt in the presence of experts, were given at random to the competitors. He easily humbled Job Pottas from Kerala, who took one minute and 40.14 seconds for the feat. The words given to the contestants were chosen from a large array of fields, including literature, arts, and science.

Shishir is the son of Dr Ramamurthy Hathwar, senior scientist working in Bangalore, who hails from Koteshwar near Kundapur, and Ashita, who is a native of Mangalore. In his early childhood, Shishir was in Canada, and is in Bangalore since he was five.  He always keeps reading various books, and spelling backwards is his hobby. He works as an electronics engineer in Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd.
