Udupi, Mar 23: The people living near the coast, who had recently turned fearful at the prospect of tsunami hitting the country’s coast in the recent past, were in for a shock again on the night of Monday March 21. The sea level not only surged, but also it was turbulent. High tide was experienced in places like Kaup, Muloor, Uchchila, Mattu Udyavar and Padukere areas in the district, and the waves were huge, creating a rainy season-like scenario.

The waves were so huge and the force with which they hit the coast was so strong, that the water even entered the fisheries road in Katpady, Mattu Udyavar and Padukere on Tuesday afternoon. The fishermen, finding that the sea has been turning volatile since the last two days, have moored their smaller boats in safer places.

As water level in the rivulets rose in tune with the tide experienced in the sea, the people living nearer to the banks of rivulets in the district had to remain awake and watch the changing conditions. As water level at Kaup Light House rose by over a metre, the local youths kept themselves prepared for facing the eventuality of floods.

People living near the coast in Nellikunje Kadappura in Kasargod fled from their homes, after observing that the sea level was rising abnormally on Tuesday night. The tumultous sea had begun dragging over 20 fisheries boats, country boats, nets etc, kept on the shore. Some of the adventurous fishermen fought with the waves and saved these things from being washed away into the sea. The sea calmed down by 2 am on Wednesday.

Although it is common for the water level in the sea to rise during the new moon day and full moon day, the water level normally subsides within an hour. Since the last two days, disturbances in the sea have been stretching to three to four hours every time. Some people blame adverse climatic condition for this phenomenon.

This is simple.. We know this year the moon came to closer ( The Moon's distance varies each month between approximately 357,000 kilometers (222,000 mi) and 406,000 km (252,000 mi) due to its elliptical orbit around the Earth (distances given are center-to-center) The combined effect of the Sun and Moon on the Earth's oceans, the tide,[6] is greatest when the Moon is either new or full. At lunar perigee the tidal force is even stronger,[7] resulting in larger high and low tides on average, but even at its most powerful this force is still weak.[2]
As the tidal force follows an inverse-cube law, that force is 18% greater than average. However, because the actual amplitude of tides varies around the world, this may not translate into a direct effect.

We have seen the recent highlights on the TV courtesy NDTV showing the damage done to almost the entire coastal zone of the country. Most of the popular beaches in Gujarat, Maharastra ,Goa,South and North Kanara, Kerala have seen encroachments and unauthorized construction in the name of development. Even Candolim one o the most beautiful beaches of Goa has been witness to irreparable damage due to the marooned 'River Princess'.

The East Coast has also not been spared and man's greed in the past 2 decades has had no limit. As usual the government wakes up only when it is too late and only adopts a via media position with various ministries blaming each other and shirking their joint responsibilities. Until and Unless quick and appropriate remedial measures are taken on a war footing by the men that matter, we will very soon be witnessing Tsunamis of the worst kind right along our coastal zone. If we recollect the coastal areas in the 1950's & 1960' s we see that the Mangroves have almost totally disappeared, the Sand dunes have been replaced by rocks and even the poor quality sand is being pilfered day in and day out. All in the name of development. There is enough on this Earth for 'EVERY' Man's need, but not enough for 'A' Man's greed !

Nothing to fear except to stay away from the beach and pull the fishing boats farther on the land. It is ripple effect of Tsunami from Japan via California.

This is a threat all those living by sea side & river side on Islands. Govt. has stopped registering any property sale deeds within 100mts from river n sea sides, to discourage people living near rivers n Sea. They are not permitted to build new houses but they can repair existing houses. I feel govt. has to allot land with interest free loans to build houses away at safer places. Now there are no buyers for river side properties. In the past our ancestors shifted to Island, so that they can grow coconuts trees, and can catch fish from the river for a living. In the past most eligible bachelor used be from Island with enough coconut trees and paddy fields. Now the trend has changed, everyone is shifting to road side no one wants to live at riverside because of Tsunami fear shortage of bridges for easy access. When I shifted from Island to National Highway side in 2000, every one blamed me for leaving ancestral property. Now I feel I am leading by example, everyone is following my footsteps.
