Mangalore: Unusual Dip in Netravati Water Level Raises Concern

Mangalore, Mar 31: The water level of the Netravati river, the lifeline of the people of Dakshina Kannada district, has seen a remarkable dip in the month of March, an unlikely phenomenon for this time of the year. As a result, agriculturists have become a worried lot.

The district received rains aplenty last year until about December end. Given this fact, the locals in Uppinangady, where the water level is at its lowest ever, feel that the scenario should have been rosy with water level not dipping until May last this year. However, it has suddenly dropped to its lowest in Uppinangady, so much so that people are able to walk across the dried-up river without any difficulty.

The locals fear that the dip in the level of water will also affect the level in the tributary, Kumaradhara, through which water is pumped out at Nekkilady village to supply water to the Puttur town. Further, Mangalore City Corporation too is dependent on the Netravati river.

The river is also a source for many gram panchayat-level water projects. Now the agriculturists and locals are fearful that this situation might affect the water level of the nearby ponds and wells too. Locals are in the fervent hope that the month of April and May may see some rains.

According to a source, illegal drawing of water from rivers and also the non-removal of silt and sand, where normally water is found aplenty, are also contributing to the dipping water level. However, the metereological department is of the opinion that there will be enough rains in April and May to bail out people and there will be no difficulty in procuring sufficient water supply. Water table will not be affected despite the situation looking bleak as of now, they added.

You see this river in August/september, a treat for the eyes. Again you see it in March/April, a very sorry plight.

Thanks Daijie for this article for creating awareness. It is essential that we learn to respect mother earth and do not tamper with nature. Few signs that we see and come across these days are so unnatural and un-expected, but yet tehy happen. It is strange that insipte of good monsoons this year, we fear the scarcity of water, which other wise should have been in abandence. Let us learn to CONSERVE OUR NATURAL RESOURCES AND PRESERVE OUR EARTH AND IT'S RICHNESS FOR OUR GENERATIONS TO COME..!!

Hello Daiji readers. When you tamper with nature, nature has her way of evening things. Nature is a great leveller. By the way every one should make a pilgrimage to the hill at Pumpwell which has already been sliced 50% as against the undertaking given by MCC as only 10%.

Dear readers..Rivers are made to store water ! and in order to do this they have to to deep enough..But recent move by Govt not to take sand from the river has caused less accumulation of water in the river bed and more sand ! when people and Govt official will learn ? I have made a good study about this..and came to conclusion that if you frequently make arrangement for sand removal and other materials river can hold and store enough water for bad times like this !
same goes to our wells and ponds too.Olden days i guess every 2 to 4 years people used to clear the debris and sludge from wells and ponds.when we fight against nature ..it will fight back.God forbid..soon we will be out of water ! Doom and destruction in the city of concrete jungle, filled with toxins, waste and pollution ! people and politicians only preach.!We need to wake up for the truth..that we are in real danger..by not taking care of our environment!this is our last chance friends !!Think how you can help !Teach your family and kids to take care of these issues.Future ? well its depends on us, each one of us are seriously responsible !

They need to do some serious dredging so that the river can hold more water. It is not that we dont get enough rains, but enough water is not stored.

Please pray to God, the Creator of universe to forgive us for our blunders and save us from His wrath. Its our responsibility to pass this planet to our next generation in the same condition we have inherited from our previous generation. Lets all make use of science and technology for the preservance and sustainance of this planet. Without the good and healthy planet whats the use of science and technology. Lets not beat our chest with pride. Lets stop destruction of flora and fauna, let us not barter concrete jungle for natural greenery. If we dont stop now, it will be too late and one day the air we breathe and water we drink shall have poisonous substances.. We need to establish ministry of environment. The civic body should have an environmental and ecological expert. But all this is possible if we have political will and do away with corruption.

Wake up call for mangaloreans. Alreay lot of destruction is done to nature. Soon days will come when there will not be any water to drink. Everywhere apartments, layouts are coming doing lot of harm to nature. But noone realises when nature retaliates it will never descriminate poor or rich whether you have car or bus. Please pay some attention on environmental issues.

This is the time to wake up and it’s a warning bell to so called 'brainy people'(Mangaloreans). We ve invited trouble in the forms of industries. We teach our kids the importance of greenery nd we run behind industrial growth. When difficult situations prey on us we run to holy places. Can we sit back and think what id our contribution towards the society or nature is. What good we have given in return to the nature. We breathe good air and omit cigarette smoke, Industrial waste, Carbon from our vehicles etc.
