Mulky: Conversion, Confinement of Minors Alleged on Prayer Centre
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SB)

Mulky, Apr 3: The women and child welfare department officials in Haleyangady near Mulky here saved a group of children, who were in illegal confinement, after conducting a raid. It is alleged that the children were also under pressure to convert from their religion.

The incident came to light when gram panchayat president when to the spot to inspect after a complaint lodged about clogged drains by the locals. It is alleged that a couple, K J Joy and Elizabeth, and their children Joel and Jobi, who are running a prayer centre are behind the gruesome act. Further, locals are suspicious about the workings of this centre, which has been functioning near railway gate here. The waste from the building and dirty water flowing from the drain have angered the locals, which resulted in the complaint.

On inspection, the GP president and members found out that the children were also subjected to domestic violence and physical abuse, which was substantiated by the children there. They said that they were working at the centre for last three years. However, K J Joy refuted the allegation and informed that it was just a simple children's hostel. He also said that he has been providing education and shelter to orphans below the age of 15, for which he also has been getting financial support from foreign countries. But he failed to produce documents to strengthen his claim. Soon, the gram panchayat authority complained to the department concerned, which resulted in the raid.

It is further learnt that the centre has not taken permission either from gram panchayat or the department concerned to run the centre.

It is also alleged that a girl from the centre has been molested, the knowledge of which made enraged locals thrash Joy. The girl has been subjected to medical examination and the results are awaited. Further investigations on four more girls, who were living here and now gone missing is also being conducted. The children also alleged that they were forced to live like Christians and read the Bible.

The police have taken Joy into to custody. The children have been admitted to child protection centre.

Who is converting whom? I think these Christian missionaries and organizations are doing right job. And yes.. they are converting... They are converting the bad to good, poor to rich, uneducated to educated, illiterate to literate. They are helping to make the lives of people around better.

I think we should learn from them instead of attacking or troubling or making fun of them. If it was not by their contribution, India would have been a third-class country without order (like some of african).

Dear Christian Missionaries and Organizations.. plz carry on your good works for the betterment of the society.

In the whole of south canara district Hindus and Catholics live live peacfully. I say Catholics because many of the hindus fail to differentiate between catholics and other christian sects. It is they who create lot of nuisance in mangalore and not catholics. Catholic church does not convert anybody. So instead of attacking the catholic churches or charity organisations, find out these sects of people and punish them under the rule of law.

Converting a person through forcible confinement, pressure or coercion is totally against the principles and teachings of Lord Jesus Christ. True conversion is not performed by a priest but should come through study, understanding, faith and acceptance of the preachings of Christ. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ has advised his followers to preach and spread the faith unto all nations of the world but he never advised conversion by pressure or coersion.

Based upon the news and the array
of comments, we are now faced with
    several questions.

Our capital New Delhi has over
    100000 children without attending
    schools. If anybody starts an
    orphanage or feeding center, there
will be plenty of children available, and their goal is not
sticking to any solid religious convictions,
but to have stomach full of food.
For the child, his or religion is
second to the pangs of hunger.

The State should mandate laws to
look after the running of each
orphanage, but if such a code of law is
    established for the microscopic
    supervison, hardly anybody will dare
to open an orphanage. Then the
orphanage has to have extra funds
    to bribe the constantly visiting
    inspection officials.

If Joy and his wife were deliberately negligence and
    abused the children or endangered
their safety, they must be punished
without any mercy, because they were running a Christian orphanage
and it must be operated with the
    highest care and ethics.

    Some comments are rather very
narrow minded like the Siva Sena
    leader talks attacking the people
    of the neighbouring States.

Those people who have thrown stones
    at the orphanage are challenged
with a question how many of you
will adopt an orphan? Think for
a moment, and suggest a solution to the massive problem of the
orphans and child labour in India.

We are really fools! In the sense that these outfits are allowed to function even in tiny places responsible to disturb peace. If true Christians and Hindus together with other people starts a major offensive against these elements by becoming vigilent then it will be a great help to the soceity at large to promote and sustain communal amity.

It is good that people have now started differentiating between the majority of original Christians (Catholics) and other sects. The Catholic Church has no control over these sects and it is a pity that when some of these sects distribute leaflets in the open, people tend to think that it is from the nearest Catholic church.

Comment @ Mr. Praveen Mangalore, This is good, and this is how these issues should be tackled, by law. Not just go and attack a Catholic church and monastery who are not involved in such things.

By seeing the names of persons involved,it appears that the group running Prayer Centre has roots in Kerala and has no affiliation to local Catholics or their sanction for the activities. The group appears like New Life Spceity. Therefore, it is wiser the readers desist from commenting from against good Chirtians of local/ DK dist assuming the things and thereby instigate counter comments. Since the matter has seized by the police allow the matter to law to take its own course. It really astonishing to know how the group took roots in this tiny town to conduct such activities detrimental to pieceful social atmosphere..

These are juveniles and minors. Forceful confinement and forceful conversion is a crime punishable by law. Any one who tries to convert minors is a criminal. If at all willful conversion were to take place the person seeking conversion must be an adult, major and must be above the age of 18. Below the age of 18 is not at all acceptable as these children still dont know whats what and who is who. The authorities must thoroughly investigate the incident without fear or favour and must be nuetral. Right and freedom of preach and practice one's religion doesnt mean that they can convert the minors. The footage in the pictures above substantiate my views and children must be treated with kind and respect and they must not be made to work and we dont have any right to take away their childhood. We as parents have no right to hjack the childhood of our own children. Expolitation of innocent and ignorant children is against the teachings of any religion... Children are Gods gift and they must be treated with respect as they are very very innocent....My heart goes to these unfortunate children..

Nothing wrong in taking care of orphans , destitute etc.regarding religion, an orphan may not have an original religion if orphaned very young.in most cases, they only know poverty and hunger , they have no time to even think of religion.but all orphanages, old age homes etc should be registered with a competent authority or else some people will start and harass inmates.
