Mangalore: Regulating Illegal Buildings – DC Warns of Intervention

Mangalore, Apr 16: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), Subodh Yadav, advised the city corporation officials to exercise vigil at the construction stage itself, for ensuring that illegal buildings do not come up in the city.

He was speaking after taking part in a progress review meeting organized at the office of the city corporation premises on Friday April 15.

“The office of the DC has been receiving a number of complaints regarding illegal buildings coming up in the city. The town planning officer of the city should function effectively. If the number of complaints increases, I will have no other go but to intervene in the matter,” he warned.

Giving information on the subject, city corporation commissioner, Dr K N Vijay Prakash, claimed that legal requirements about buildings are being strictly enforced in the city, and that it is being ensured that the buildings do not violate the building policy. He said that two cases of violation were detected in the city, and that construction of the same was suspended.

“The city corporation has been verifying all consecution work through a four-pronged mechanism. The city corporation has been taking measures to ensure that no illegal buildings are constructed within its jurisdiction, and that the constructions conform to the legal requirements in every stage,” he said. He also disclosed that four cases of disposing of construction waste were identified and cases were registered against the guilty. He said that the city corporation has been vigorously pursuing the issue of use of banned plastic, and that 160 cases had been registered so far in respect of violations. He added that the consumers and merchants alike have responded to this drive in excess of expectations.  The deputy commissioner observed that there is a need to continue to maintain the tempo of this drive even in future.

    MUDA is a superfluous Office. The Staff members' only aim is to reject all applications and make them fill in pockets of the concerned officials so that they can issue NOC regardless of its genuineness or illegality. Even in the past when it was CIT (City Improvement Trust} it functioned in the same manner, result all these big buildings in all roadsides making the roadwidening task difficult. See now, those roads where widened have neighther foot path nor bus-shelter space. City is developed only in terms of big buildings, but in terms of roads, all bottlenecks.

    Your Predecessors have already pulled real tax paid, plan approved buildings.
    I succeeded in identifying an illegal encroachment building coming behind my home to the present MMC Commissioner, TPO & DC of DK with records earlier. But they were not even able to touch the illegal encroachment buildings that have come up by falsifying records because those buildings came up due to favoritism of ruling party politicians.They weren't able to even spot inspect that place due to pressures & interferences from Ruling party members. No use in simply giving statements like your predecessors . You too might invite their wrath and fall in line with your predecessors in failing to tackle this issue without revisiting those faced failures of your predecessors.
