Bangalore: One in 20 IT Professionals at Risk of Suicide

Bangalore, Apr 25 (DHNS) : In the 15 years of his professional life in the IT industry and the three years before that at college, Prabhakar was a successful professional. 

His latest project was complex and challenging. Like others in his industry, Prabhakar spent sleepless nights to write the software, but it never proved easy.

Finally, on April 16, after days of sleepless struggle and inordinate pressure, Prabhakar took the extreme step of taking his life, leaving his colleagues in a state of shock and fellow professionals in the industry in despair.

Facing challenge

“People in our industry are so much after success that they don’t see the merit of facing the challenge,” said Nidhin, an IT professional and organiser of a candle light vigil for Prabhakar on Saturday on behalf of IT and ITeS Employees Centre (ITEC), an informal network to create awareness on the dangers of work-related stress and to dissuade those like Prabhakar from taking the extreme step of ending their lives. “Overload resulting in spillover of work at home, guilt of being less attentive to family, career-related issues and dissatisfaction - all add up taking a severe toll on one’s overall health and wellness,” notes a ITEC statement.

Divorce cases on the rise

“Cases of  divorce have been on the rise and the problem of childless marriages has many times become more of a lifestyle issue than a medical reason. Many people report feelings like frustration, being overwhelmed, anxiety, other health problems like headache, backache, hypertension, insomnia etc.”

According to Senthil, a senior IT professional, too much of the ‘can-do’ attitude amongst professionals and the tendency to take pressure far beyond their capacity are reasons why IT professionals are giving farmers a run when it comes to suicides.

“When you’re prepared to take too much pressure, then it’s quite possible that you’re seen as some kind of a super hero. No one would understand your limitation and would place unreasonable expectations on you. That’s clear from the note Prabhakar had left in which he had admitted to stress,” Senthil, who was at the candle light vigil, said.

The professionals feel though companies are not solely to be blamed for the situation, it is important to bring about a regulation on fair utilisation of talent and stricter
enforcement of work-life balance.

Helpline for professionals

ITEC is also planning to establish a helpline for professionals under tremendous stress and hopes that talking to psychologists and counsellors would free employees from the stress and the immediate threat of them committing suicide. They are also proposing an industry wide study on work-related stress from which companies can learn how to help their employees overcome it.

They say one in 20 IT professionals is contemplating suicide, a figure that would far surpass the national average and would also be more than the numbers seen in farming if left unchecked.

“It’s our request to all concerned not to place too much of expectation on us. We’re as human as anybody else and the fact of our success doesn’t make us any more than what we are,” said Raja, another IT professional at the vigil on Saturday.

In the absence of any other support, the IT professionals feel that time has now come for them to support each other and create awareness on the overall well-being and health rather than running after the mirage called success.

    It is an interesting article to
    pay serious attention.

    The comment of " hafeeex" has spoken deeper truth about
    real reason.

    We can be very proud about the
    great education and fat salary of
    our children, but if they are
    depressed and may take a quick
    action at any time to commit
    suicide, that does't worth anything.

    The eastern countries including
    India were "family based" but the
    western culture is totally
    "individual based". When I ask
    some parents about their children,
    some of them are not sure where
    they are working or living totally
    separated from them.

    The modern trend of "career-married" is simply leading the young
    gereration to get into the real
    marriage very late and after the
    marriage, many are not concerned
    with running a happy family life,
    but simply hanging on to the
    career security. Big job, big
    income.

    The western corporations will use
    every employee to the maximum. Promotions and increase in
    salary are not offered out of any
    divine compassion, but only after
    strictly using every employee to
    the maximum. The employees will
    miss sleep, relaxation, family life
    etc, and may be forced to drugs
    and liquor as a daily routine. Then the real dangerious path of
    destruction starts. If this
    problem is not corrected, there will be a lot of consequences in
    the future like more suicide,
    broken families, drug addicts etc.

    Whether it is IT profession or any other profession, each and everyone of us have to realize that we are in a fast moving and fast changing world. The world is confronted with tons of challenges, and no one is exempted from the new challenges - political, economical or social

    In India, nearly ten million students get graduated each year. There are no ten million jobs created anywhere in the world. Job opportunities in overseas countries, particularly in the Middle East were abundantly available fifty years, forty years ago and thirty years ago because until then all the Oil and Gas beneath the sands was owned by the Westerners and they created abundance of job opportunities for all the developing world before the dawn of the neo-colonial era.

    The world of economy has changed the outlook since the 1980's. New generations have emerged with new Educational diplomas and degrees while the era of automation thru computerization has reduced the usage of manpower.

    The world of younger generation needs instant gratification and quick rewards for their Degrees. Growing inflation has caused economic constraints and has compounded the economic situations even further. "Dignity of Labour" is the best answer for all those young graduates to accept whatever job opportunities that are available to them so that they can gain the initial footing in whichever field available. "Survival" is the key that should enable the young men and women to accept every challenge with a smile.

    Any person who work more than 8 hours a day or more than 40 hours in a week and continues to work for many years need counseling at least every six months.

    Why counseling is required and how it will help read the article below:

    Physical connections create pathways in the brain that can be altered when we learn something new. These changes to the brain can be seen with medical imagery. With long term difficult things like learning to play a musical instrument, these changes can be permanent. Addiction is a learned behavior that changes the brain as well. The brain becomes conditioned to want the substance. Through counseling and other behavioral modification we can actually, in some cases, change the brain physically. By changing our environment, starting a new job, new hobbies and friends, all will alter our brain in some way. It is possible to undo some of the changes that occurred while addicted. Therapy will recondition the brain closer to pre-addiction status. This will better prepare the patient for a time when they may no longer require medication.

    Medication alone can reduce cravings and withdrawal, but recovering from an addictive disorder requires a rewiring of the brain and medication alone is not enough. Attention to eliminating things in life that cause stress or depression will help minimize the chance of relapse. Disassociating with friends who are in active addiction can be difficult but very necessary.

    An experienced counselor/therapist will be able to teach other techniques that will further help undo some of the brain changes and conditioned learning that occurred while becoming and once addicted.
    It is important to find a counselor/therapist that is skilled in treating patients that employ medications in their treatment. Some counselors still dismiss the science behind addiction medicine because they may have been able to successfully end their addiction without it. They sometimes zealously focus on the singular approach that helped them and as a result may not be providing the best care for an individual who may require medication. It pays to find a counselor with a modern evidence-based philosophy of addiction treatment.


    Counseling/therapy helps the patient rebuild relationships, repair finances, get a job, assume family responsibilities, decrease stress, anxiety and depression, and helps the patient make other meaningful changes in their lives that will allow them to achieve and maintain addiction remission.

    Very sad story of our new generation. This is an example of capitalistic approach of life, where money , success is important than life. This Philosophy failed in America, Japan, Korea and all of Europe. Now this bug is in Asian countries, like China, India and many other developing countries. every one want success, Success is sweet and rewarding , but what Cost?

    Our dependence on automation is going at such rapid speed that, in possibly 2 decades human beings will be classfied as normal human beings and software professionals. Automation is not without expenses and software developer is one who will bear the ultimate brunt of making our lives comfortable. The recent suicides and killings are enough warnings for parents who force their children to take software as carrer, without knowing whether software is their cup of coffee or not.

    Very few companies are good at making you work and at the same time deliver with ease .Its actually the individuals who push themselves too much changing jobs often to get more money accepting more work just to proove that you are good at your job and get promoted faster I think individuals should take a call on how much is enough work for them!!!no point in early burn outs you should take it easy so that you enjoy your career

    I fully agree with this writer, being an IT professional myself I will lead you to some IT insights.
    Our IT professionals are the best in the World.
    To be the best our guys have to pay a price and sometimes pay for it with their life.
    The only difference between an Indian IT professional and non Indian is our Indians do not stop working.
    Even after office hours they carry home their work related projects, problems, issues and targets.
    Most of them go home only to have dinner and start working again fully ignoring the family.

    It is very common for a Project Head to state to his team that this Project was required YESTERDAY.
    Every IT professional is a profit center and at the end of every month / year we compute what is the profitability of this individual. Rewards, increments and promotions are given based on his profitability and ofcourse every one cannot be a winner. If the looser is weak hearted he takes the escape route.
