Beltangady, Apr 26: Several parts of Dakshina Kannada district received moderate to heavy rainfall on Tuesday accompanied by winds cooling off the temperature towards the evening. On Tuesday, the skies were overcast with rain clouds from the morning and several places received rainfall by afternoon.
Mangaluru city experienced scorching heat throughout the day and was cloudy as well. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degrees celsius and a minimum temperature of 25 degrees celsius on Tuesday.
Due to heavy rainfall, a few trees fell onto the roads in Gundya and blocked vehicular traffic along Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway for close to an hour. Electric poles were uprooted and a few shops were damaged along with the roof of a farmhouse belonging to Poovappa flying off as well.
A huge tree fell in Gundya of Shiradi village and damaged a shop on Tuesday evening.
Locals and forest department officials helped in clearing the highway and smoothening the traffic flow.
Many areca trees and a few agricultural crops were damaged due to winds.
Revenue department officials accompanied by Panchayat officials paid a visit to the spot and inspected the damage caused due to the rain.
The India Meteorological Department has announced a yellow alert in the coastal districts on April 29 and 30 and forecast the likelihood of widespread rainfall during the period.
Meanwhile, Kukke Subrahmanya received heavy thundershowers for about an hour accompanied by winds.
Kukke Subrahmanya, Kollamogru, Harihara Pallathadka, Ainakidu, Guttigaru, Yenekallu, Kaikamba and Panja besides a few other places received good rainfall. Sullia received rain for just about five minutes and later the weather conditions remained overcast and cloudy.
Low-lying areas were flooded and inundated with rainwater making it difficult for vehicles to move.
Kannadi Hole bridge in Subrahmanya was brimming with water making it difficult for vehicles to move. With the help of social worker Dr Ravi and his colleagues, the water level on the bridge receded considerably. Beltangady too received rainfall on Tuesday. Kokkada, Aladangady, Nedse, Mundaje, Latla, Didupe, Nada, Kalmanja, Chibidri, Charmady, Kadirudyavara and other villages in the taluk received moderate rainfall. Farms and agricultural fields that had gone dry and were longing for water were relieved with this spell of rainfall.
