Beltangady, May 26: Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Beltangady BJP MLA Harish Poonja after a video emerged allegedly accusing chief minister Siddaramaiah of ‘murdering 24 Hindus’ in his previous tenure of administration.

The second time MLA from Beltangady legislative assembly constituency had made the controversial remark against the chief minister during his victory celebration organised at Beltangady on May 22.

It may be also recalled that in the video, Poonja allegedly criticised former Hindu leaders and alleged that they had campaigned in favour of the Congress.

In his speech Poonja said ‘you sought vote for Siddaramaiah, who got 24 Hindu activists killed’.

Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Dr Vikram Amathe confirmed to a national newspaper that the FIR has been registered against MLA Harish Poonja at Beltangady police station based on the complaint filed by Mahila Congress activist Namitha K Poojary.

It may be recalled that KPCC co-ordinator Pratibha Kulai met IGP western range Dr Chandragupta and submitted a memorandum to initiate action against Poonja on Thursday. Mahila Congress district president Shalet Pinto filed a case against Poonja with Mangaluru city police commissioner Kuldip R Jain against Poonja.

MLC and DCC president Harish Kumar stated that the Congress will file a defamation suit against Poonja over false remarks against the chief minister.

Beltangady police have registered a case against Poonja under 153 and 153a and 505(1)(b)(c)(2) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
