Mangaluru, Aug 5: St Agnes College is a premier Catholic educational institution founded on July 2, 1921 by a great visionary Mother Mary Aloysia, the second superior general of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation. St Agnes College was the first women's college on the west coast of India and the first, under private management, in the whole country. St Agnes College focuses on student-centered learning, throwing open new avenues of study and specialization and on designing challenging courses to suit the student community. Over the years, the college has grown in strength and infrastructure and has withstood the vicissitudes of time and lived up to the challenges posed by changes in higher education. All the while, the institution has kept aloft its banner declaring that 'God is our strength'. The institution has the distinction of producing men and women graduates and post-graduates who hold positions in different spheres as educators, scientists, chartered accountants, entrepreneurs, management professionals and service professionals all over the world.

The campus having over 6000 students from nursery to post graduate and even research scholars is known for its academic excellence, conducive atmosphere, community concern/service, extension activities, discipline, imparting social, ethical and family values (value based education), spirit of tolerance and mutual respect and up-building.

The college took the initiative of submitting itself to the accreditation process conducted by the NAAC. It was the first institution in Mangalore University to do so. The college had the honour of being awarded a ‘Five Star’ grade. Following the re-accreditation process by the NAAC in 2005. In 2012, the college earned an ‘A’ grade and in 2017, the college has been accredited by NAAC with ‘A+’ with a CGPA of 3.65/4 in the fourth cycle.

It has, besides, been recognized as a ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ in 2006 and again in 2011 by the post ‘CPE’ PHASE II and has been awarded ‘College of Excellence’ by UGC, New Delhi in the year 2017 and has been the recipient of the ‘Jimmy and Roselyn Carter Foundation Partnership Award’ for its path breaking work in the field of watershed management which has greatly benefited villages in the suburbs of Mangaluru. The college has received ‘Star College Status’ by DBT, MST, government of India.

No institution committed to the cause of higher education can rest on its laurels. St Agnes College is sensitively aware of this. Therefore, to promote academic excellence in teaching and research, the management of St Agnes College has accepted the status of academic autonomy for the college since 2007. In the autonomous set up, the college is free to frame its own syllabi for the various courses and adopt suitable innovative methods of teaching, learning and evaluation. The Mangalore University confers the degree or gives the diploma to the qualified candidates presented by the college. With autonomy, the college is more efficient to teach job-oriented subjects, conduct examinations and announce results within the prescribed structures of the semester pattern.

St Agnes College made its foray into postgraduate education in 2008 with masters programmes in English and psychology. Gradually, other courses were introduced with MCom in the year 2009, MSc clinical psychology and MSc chemistry in the year 2010, MSc big data analytics in the year 2019, and MBA and MCA in the year 2022. St Agnes Centre for PG Studies and Research has been granted recognition by Mangalore University as one of the affiliated research centers in the faculties of English, chemistry, psychology and commerce.

The departments carefully and thoughtfully plan their course content in order to offer students wishing to earn postgraduate degrees the most relevant curricular experience and to offer to society, upright, sensitive and intelligent citizens. Further, one of the major objectives of the curriculum has been the employability of the students upon their successful completion of the programmes. Students are also prepared for futures in research, particularly through project work.

Among the strengths of the departments are their dedicated and well-qualified staff who have distinguished themselves academically. The staff and students employ technology for the teaching-learning process and the former use innovative methods to enrich the classroom experience. Students are mentored in the writing of scholarly papers for presentation at national and inter-collegiate seminars/conferences, and are encouraged to get them published. They are trained to answer NET and SLET and to participate in contests at various college festivals and have often returned bearing laurels.

Courses like cultural studies, literature from the margins, postcolonial thought and literature, teaching of English as a second language and English for specific purposes lend the MA English programme contemporary relevance, and make the students highly employable. Students are trained in the writing of research papers and in making research-based presentations which are part of the curriculum.

The psychology department's mission is to train students to become effective counseling psychologists, who are academically competent, responsible, and dedicated to serving society by addressing emotional, physical, and mental health issues.

The clinical psychology programme is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru. Students are constantly exposed to a multitude of settings including hospitals, clinics, and medical colleges. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to address core competencies essential for clinical psychologists, for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders and social problems. The programme includes a one-month posting in community mental health hospitals to gain valuable clinical observation and experience.

The department of chemistry focuses on inculcating scientific temper by strengthening the theoretical foundation in the subject. The department has a well-equipped laboratory that enables practical experience.

The MCom programme is highly application oriented and hence the department follows participant centric teaching methods like lectures, case studies, individual and group presentations, assignments and survey-based field projects.

The MSc Big Data Analytics programme is an application oriented course, structured by academicians and industry experts and provides expertise in theoretical and practical concepts through hands-on experience in data analytics tools and techniques. Students get opportunities during their internship to be part of client projects in IT based organizations and also get placed in the IT sector.

The MCA and MBA programmes are affiliated to Mangalore University and are approved by AICTE. The MCA curriculum is structured on the study and analysis of software development methodologies in diverse application domains and industry demands. The MBA programme offers a curriculum designed to develop effective leaders for the global business landscape. It focuses on conceptual and analytical reasoning, mentorship, and industry exposure, empowering graduates to excel in diverse leadership roles.

As part of the postgraduate curriculum, students do internships and attend online courses, to enhance themselves in their respective fields of study. The programmes focus on the holistic development of students and acquaint them with a broader and sensitive understanding of human and societal relations and their inherent issues and problems.
