Udupi, Nov 24: “The district authorities have been conducting raids at various places time and again, but have the raids created any kind of positive results?” questioned Dion D’Souza, a social worker.
He further said, "If the district authority is really committed towards the containment of plastic carry bags why not cut the production and supply chain of plastics in the district?
"The containment and complete ban of plastic carry bags is surely the right way and the first step to protect our environment, but it's only possible if the rules are bought into strict implementation through the district and the alternatives are in ample supply.
"The people and business owners have now got into a habit of plastic ban time and over again. He said, “Ban on plastic carry bag has been like a viral fever in Udupi which comes and goes.”
"The recent raids of plastics in the district have created a negative effect on the medium and small-scale businesses. The district administration is totally unprepared and hasn't let out any perfect alternative to replace plastics used for various purposes. Whatever alternative given is too expensive. While the cost of daily essentials is already high, the added cost of packaging the products is a big challenge for medium and small-scale businesses," he said.
He further stated, “Why should the medium and small-scale businesses suffer with this uneven implementation of plastic ban? When the Udupi district has been achieving great heights in the collection and segregation of waste, the perfect implementation in ban of plastic carry bags will help build a clean and green Udupi. I request for the cooperation of the people and urge the district administration to get into serious action to make Udupi - Clean and Green City.”
