UN Pledges Key Role in Libya Reconstruction

United Nations, Sep 21 (IANS): The UN will play a key role in the political transition and reconstruction in Libya, said Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, president of the 66th UN General Assembly session.

The president made the statement Tuesday while addressing a high-level meeting on Libya, convened by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Xinhua reported.

"The UN will play a central role in coordinating international support for the political transition in Libya and the reconstruction of the country," Al-Nasser said.

He welcomesd the recent resolution adopted by the Security Council to set up a UN Support Mission in Libya to assist and support Libyan efforts for political transition.

He, however, noted that it was for the interim Libyan authorities to define their national needs, priorities and transition requirements.

After the ouster of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi following months of a NATO-led operation, the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) has been recognised as the legitimate power in Libya by some 60 countries.
